A self-absorbed young actor humiliates an elderly Noh performer, who then commits suicide. His act of cruelty compels his father to disown him, leading the once promising actor to a life on the streets. But his desire to win back the respect of his father and the affection of the dead actor's daughter pushes him toward a more noble existence. Naruse employed a delicately structured mise-en-scene in this family melodrama, which evokes the work of Josef von Sternberg.

One of the more interesting film from Mikio Naruse during this period. That doesn't mean it's any better than his rest, but it had it's sappier soapy aspect to make some of it interesting. Didn't feel the story was all that developed. Though I'm yet to truly love a Naruse up to this point, so it might simply be that his style is not 100% for me.

An unremarkable film from Naruse. A young Noh performer insults an arrogant old master, who kills himself. The young guy is then disowned by his father and kicked out of the troupe. It's a fairly typical Japanese story of shame and redemption and honor... basically, people taking shit way too seriously. It's not so dull that I couldn't sit through it, but it's not that engaging, either. A couple of nice shots, but otherwise for Naruse fanatics only.
