A rushed and unnecessary sequel. The more comedic tone is jarring and doesn't fit the material.

The scene where a bored-looking band of monkeys perform as a pretend band while a bored-looking audiences gazes boredly on is so meta, as if Schoedsack knew he was making a boring movie for people to watch in boredom until finally FINALLY a big gorilla comes out but by then I'm so BORED it's too late and im bored of writing about it too

I'd like to score this higher just for being insanely daring & doing something different (the screenwriter admitted she didn't think the first one could be topped, so she made a comedy), but only kids are likely to find this funny & they won't be able to sit through the first 40 monster-free minutes. & is it me or do the creature efx look worse? & am I really supposed to be that invested in Denham running away from all the lawsuits, destruction & death created by his hubris the last time around?

The follow up to the now iconic "King Kong"(1933) was rushed into theaters that very same year to capitalize on the film's success, and sadly for fans of the original it feels that way. The sequel was unable to properly repeat the master quality and craftsmanship of the visual effects seen in the original, although understandably under the circumstances. The movie attempts to offset the loss of spectacle with humor, and as a fun adventure comedy the film is solid B-movie entertainment.

Son of Kong is bad, but it's certainly the best sequel to King Kong they could have rushed out. It's nowhere near the tonal masterpiece that was the original, but the familiar face of Denham was nice to see. This, combined with the nostalgic stop-motion help the case for this film, even if the effects are a little dated and not as good as the original. It's not a masterpiece, but it could be worth your time if you liked the original.

Lame sequel strongly suggests that Schoedsack probably fetched coffee and donuts for Cooper on set and told him his shots were 'swell'.

For a film that was rushed into production, this is OK. It has, perhaps surprisingly, very little of the half-baked about it, as you might have expected. Instead, the filmmakers were fairly shrewd in their approach. They knew that the follow-up to King Kong was never going to surpass the original, so they didn't even try. They made this one fun, and developed the characters from the first film. Although it's not in the same league as its predecessor, it's still well worth a look

The Son of Kong, the sequel to King Kong came out the same year and was a clear rush job. While they tried to bring some of the same formula as the original it was not even close to be as ambitious or well thought out. But trying to merit it on it's own qualities, it's a entertaining time filler. More of an average adventure movie of the time with some stop-motion animation mixed in with a smaller King Kong fighting some pre-historic animals. One can find a lot to love in this variation too.

As a follow up to Kong it fails, but as a b-movie adventure film it does the job. It also comes up with a plausible enough scenario. Kinda reminds me of the Star Wars prequels. There's a lot of useless scenes to fill the running time and most everything in there is to remind you of the better film that came first but not much else. But the way they handle baby Kong especially reminds me of JarJar Binks. But at least it's only 69 minutes.

A shockingly cheesy follow-up for its time, generously padded with footage lifted intact from the first film, this set a bad sequel precedent for decades to come. Still fun going, though, with Schoedsack and crew emphasizing humor and pathos over thrills.

Yes, it's an intentionally cheesy followup made on a six month turnaround on a small budget. No, the first 40 minutes are not remotely worth your time (unless you are Robert Armstrong, and appreciate having a love interest this time, since Carl Denham is the one returning character anyone will remember). And yes, O'Brien handed as much as possible off to his assistant (for a world of reasons professional and private). The effects are some silly fun once you get to them, though.

Look ... this is nowhere as good as "King Kong", but that's a real masterpiece and this is a sequel they managed to release later the same year. You gotta expect diminishing returns here. This one is a short (barely over an hour), fast paced flick with something happening every few minutes and a goddamned musical monkey act, so show it some respect! That said ... it would be nice if Kong Jr. showed up before most of the movie was over.

Check out the IMDB trivia if you’re curious on the lackluster sfx this time around (be ready for some real dark stuff). Not really so bad, all things considered.

A bit too cheesy and goofy for my taste but there is still some fun to be had. It takes way too long for the slightly disappointing Baby Kong to show up.

Without being too cynical, "The Son of Kong" feels like a by-the-numbers sequel, made to capitalize on the success of "King Kong". The first half, featuring a broke Denham trying to get away from his Kong-related debts and a chance meeting with the guy who'd given him the map to Skull Island, is interesting, although the lightweight style is miles away from the suspense of the original. The second half needed two things: a story and stakes; instead, it plays like a cheap and pointless rehash.

I'm glad that I'm able to watch it now, after Warner Bros. released this film with the classic original when they finally brought it out on DVD in 2005. My mom bought me the set with both films, as well as the original "Mighty Joe Young," that year for my birthday, and though it's hardly a good film, "Son of Kong" is one I have no problem keeping in my collection for years to come.

Not up to the caliber of the original Kong by any means, but delivers some good stop-motion monster romps, and really what else can you ask for from a film?
