An overlooked gem. No more than a well-acted and spryly directed love triangle tale... which, in Truffaut's hands, is more than enough. In fact, it's not far from flawless.

Truffaut crafts a pretty good melodrama, with a great grindhouse end.

The subject matter is not overly appealing to this viewer, but there is more going on beneath the surface, and it is undeniably well shot and performed. It also builds a certain amount of tension and power in its final act, where the plot goes in unexpected directions, leading to a climax that is quite ballsy and courageous, if not completely convincing.

É como se Hitchcock transformasse em suspense uma trama de adultério. A cena em que Nelly Benedetti fala umas verdades para o cara na rua é de lavar a alma. DVD Versátil Nouvelle Vague Volume 1.

Gentle and graceful. The cinematography is brilliant, as well as acting and pretty much everything else

Hitchcock's influence is all over this one: mundane situations are injected with thriller suspense, a cruel sense of irony, duplicitous mirror images and dramatic edits. A good film on the carnal desires that debase even the bourgeoisie, but I feel it lacks a certain something that would make it among Truffaut's best.

It's solid and enjoyable, but I'm not sure I really care about Truffaut anymore. When it comes to diagnosing fuckboyism, Rohmer is definitely preferred. It feels kind of slight and inconsequential, which is pretty damning for a film that uh, ends the way this one does. It's more concerned with building tension and being a thriller, which is perfectly fine, but I must admit, it's not the sort of thing I look for in a movie like this.

One of my favorite Truffaut films and one of his "Hitchcockian" ones even though this is not a proper thriller. The protagonist is sort of an every man who falls for an air hostess and starts an affair. He doesn't really express his emotions and it's up to the viewer to decide what his motives are. Truffaut doesn't pick any sides and he gives enough screen time for all three parties: the wife, the mistress and the husband.

As the plot thickens, and the protagonist realises certain things about himself, the viewer will plunge directly into a reflective state of mind - a state of mind, which a lot of films try emulate, but most fail at, simply because it can't be forced. It has to come together gently and that is the case with La Peau Douce.

I love the little things Truffaut picks up on, the small moments that many directors would overlook. Having Coutard behind the camera doesn't hurt either. Truffaut's early period was his heyday, and although this one isn't quite as exciting as 400 Blows or Jules et Jim, it's very good. Fresh and compelling.

Many years since I saw this, but what I recall is the amusingly thrillerish presentation of academic life as involving much rushing about and screeching of tyres.
