Young Sayuri has been living at a boarding school when one day her father suddenly shows up to bring her home. However, right after bringing Sayuri to her new home he has to leave on a business trip. Sayuri soon learns that strange things are going on in this house. She finds out she has a sister, Tamami, who spends most of her time hiding in the attic.Tamami acts in an increasinly threatening way towards Sayuri, but neither Sayuri's mother nor the maid will believe her when she tells them. Daiei adaptation of a manga about a young girl named Sayuri (who erroneously believed she was an orphan) being reunited with her birth family, only to discover all sorts of wacky supernatural shit going on in their house. The horror elements are fairly tame, but for a black and white feature it conjures up some decidedly effective sequences of weird surrealism, mostly in the form of Sayuri's vivid dreams. Her plucky determination and will to survive is matched only by the depth of her dimples.

Very much of it's time and that injures it near fatally. Tho well shot (esp condidering its age) some of the special effects just look silly. If you are a fan of older cinema give it a few more points, but for me it was lacking. IMO no horror or suspense.

A menina cobra e a bruxa grisalha estreava há 55 anos no Japão. É um desses filmes de horror old school japoneses que não consigo decidir se odiei ou se achei uma obra-prima, exagero meu, nunca odiaria esse filme, me foi tão interessante que tentei achar online o mangá em que foi baseado: Scared of mama do Kazuo Umezu. Se alguém o tiver em pdf em português, inglês, espanhol, italiano ou francês me mandem pelo Facebook, por favor! Box Versátil Obras-primas do Terror Horror Japonês Volume 2.

Man what a twisted movie this turned out to be. It plays as both a kid's fantasy and an adult psychological horror film at the same and the crazy thing is, it actually works.

This film seems undecided about its target audience. The family drama seems targetted at young girls while some of the horror scenes arguablgy are inappropriate for children. Then again, we all watch such things earlier than we should anyway, don't we... The story felt a bit underdeveloped and fairly predictable. The surrealistic dream/fantasy sequences were fun though, and they seemed similar enough to some of Obayashi's work that it made me wonder if he may have been inspired by this movie.
