Slower than Slow West and not as open as Open Range, it delivered enough intrigue to keep me along the journey even if it peters out a little. There is something that these indie westerns understand about the reality of this era but they don't always display what makes westerns as a genre interesting in the first place. This does fine though. I enjoyed. Obviously not a ringing endorsement but worth a watch.

Much like his father Michel, Jacques Audiard is an absolute ace when it comes to screenwriting, combining sharp prose and excellent character work in what might just be the best Red Dead Redemption adaptation we'll never get. Needed more tooth brushing, haircutting and random bar fights, because that's what western life is all about.

What at first comes off as a simplistic Western actually ends up being a rather touching character study. Absolutely superb acting from Phoenix and Reilly, and a very likable supporting cast. Audiard's dialogue is exquisite and he shows some excellent directorial touches as well. A little slow at first, but once you get what Audiard was going for it becomes supremely enjoyable.

Quite unlike any other post-millennial neo-western. The source story isn't great - it seems like some sort of psychological drama with a moral - but Audiard elevates it. The brutal cynicism of the wild west is graphically displayed, but also the innocence and naivety. Tragicomic twists abound en route to a clever anti-climatic, anti-westernly ending. It's beautifully shot, and Phoenix and Reilly's leads totally make up for Gyllenhaal and Ahmed's shaky supporting parts.

John C Reilly and Joaquin Phoenix both give good performances in this film. The script has some slow moments but several good ones as well. Overall I would recommend this movie.

Inconsistent neo-western hits some fascinating highs and ho-hum lows. It feels like it should have performed higher, with the talented cast. Still, it's wonderfully shot and the high points tend to outweigh said lows.

This quiet modern Western succeeds, in large part, due to its cast. The four leads are fantastic in their muted bravado and naivety. Handsomely shot, the film takes it time to explore each character and his mode of downfall.

Dull, slowly paced western never comes together, despite committed performances from the star quartet; it doesn't help that the two brothers as characters are ineffectual (Reilly) and gratingly unlikable (Phoenix). Difficult to understand exactly what Audiard is trying here with his deconstruction of the American western; a wet fizzle of a finale almost feels like a bad shaggy dog joke. Extremely disappointing given the talent involved.

The Sister Brothers, son iyi western filminin The Hateful Eight olduğunu sadece teyit etmekle kalmıyor ve birbirinden anlamsız sahne birleşimleriyle izleyiciyi de kendisinden nefret ettiriyor. "Bir Western filmi nasıl olmaz?" sorusunu kendinize veya birkaç kişiye sorarsanız cevap olarak bu filmi örnek gösterebilirsiniz. Joaquin Phoenix, John C. Reilly, Jake Gyllenhaal ve Riz Ahmed'e yazık olmuş ve yıldızları da hiç parlayamamış.

Contrary to the what the title, and John C. Reilly's presence seem to suggest there's not much comedy to be had here. Instead we have a somewhat odd and sometimes grim tale of two guns for hire tracking their latest target through Oregon. It briefly heads off into Treasure of The Sierra Madre territory but then changes its mind and decides to be about nothing at all in the end. It's not bad by any means, and Reilly is excellent, but it does seem kind of pointless when you stop to think about it.

The novel is one of my favourite novels of the past decade or whatever, but this doesn't quite hit those heights, which is a shame because I really expected more. But that doesn't mean it's bad, maybe my own expectations hurt it; it's certainly entertaining, slightly odd, different, a little unpredictable with good performances, dialogue and character work. The anticlimactic ending is a nice touch and it's even a little peaceful. Great movie, but don't absolutely love it.

A truly strange turn for Audiard's filmography. I'd easily call this the most offbeat Western film I've ever seen. Nearly genre-less outside of its setting, its faint comedy lies in the constant anti-climatic revelations; recalling the Coens, only without the punch. A bit of a shame considering the talent.

The strangest Western in a long time, eliciting the existential destitution of a film like Robert Benton's Bad Company while offering far superior character work. It has weirdly clean visuals for both Audiard and DP Debie, hardly career highlights but still above average.

Slower than I anticipated, but still really enjoyed this on the whole. Humour and savagery well interwoven in this tale. Good performances. Feels like they decided to throw down 90% of the budget on the cast which left far less than most spend on the action elements of westerns like this. Still, this wasn't a negative here. Perhaps 15 min too long. 7.0

Shifting tones mercilessly, this plays in its early stages as not one but two buddy comedies, albeit with blasts of violence, and is very well played by its quartet of leads. It becomes increasingly dark as it progresses. I wasn't completely convinced by the final act, but this is mostly enjoyable stuff, and Benoît Debie's photography is beautiful.

This movie just put every standard, stuffy western to shame, and put the "wild" in wild west. After a mysterious start, I thought I was missing something. But no, this movie unravels itself beautifully. There is nuance and artistry here, as well as savagery and real consequences at every turn. The excellent performances make you feel sympathy for the four main characters, despite the despicable actions of the Sisters brothers. Highly recommended, and I want to see it again soon.

A high-quality cast is enlisted to portray slightly unusual characters in fairly generic situations but with brutal moments: in short Coenesque, but a bit more subdued. The conclusion about going home to Ma is decidedly underwhelming and tends to make what came before seem of lesser significance: perhaps an example of an actor (Reilly) getting overly excited about a novel that is a bit more formulaic or sentimental than it appeared to him at first sight. Producers include Mungiu and a Dardenne.

Decent darkly comedic western which feels equally connected to contemporary slick thrillers like Django Unchained as it does to genre classics like Sierra Madre. The duo tread a fine line between heroes and villains so it's quite important that the film is visually rich to keep the audience invested. The plot meanders a bit but the climax is gripping and tragic.

This is a very atmospheric Western crime drama film, with some potential mild(ish) jump scares. I liked the somewhat menacing, slow drawn out chords played in the background. Its got quite a 'mean and moody' feel to it. The script is quite decent, with some thoughtful dialogue and the characterisation is good too, with John C. Reilly playing the more aloof, introverted one (Eli), while Joaquin Phoenix plays the less subtle, more openly aggressive one (Charlie).

I really enjoyed this novel, so a small part of my heart broke as I watched this. The cast, the setting, the source material - everything on paper makes this a wonderful film. I probably liked this a little more than I should have. It had great star power with Joaquin Phoenix, Jake Gyllenhaal and John C Reilly. Most of it was engaging and interesting. So many missed opportunities to be better. It tells a unique rough-and-tumble story, albeit sometimes rather poorly. Though it was never boring, it sadly ended with a thud rather than a bang. It holds your interest and was not predictable, so worth watching.

Eh, I just couldn't get into this. I'm sure that there's a lot to appreciate here, but me and this movie never quite clicked. More specifically: I just couldn't get into the titular duo. I found them both to be such boring characters. The other duo – played by Jake Gyllenhaal and Riz Ahmed – is significantly more interesting, and I desperately wanted more of them and less of Joaquin Phoenix getting drunk. Unfortunately, the movie didn't grant my wish.
