Safe and predictable coming of ager springs absolutely no surprises in its tale of a dissatisfied, uptight youth learning the ways of frivolity from an aging, seasoned author, but Keitel's quite wonderful performance (bringing Anthony Quinn to mind), Jackson's competent abilities as a lightweight leading man, and some gorgeous, idealised, golden-hued Italian scenery, make the film work far better than it probably deserves to.
