Totally nuts and overreaching as only a first film can be, but also incredibly ambitious and skillful for a debut (not that i'd expect anything less from a filmmaker as preternaturally talented as Arnaud Desplechin, to be honest). It lacks some of the maturity and tonal control that would mark his later masterpieces, but it's fascinating both for the ways in which it announces the traits that would become Desplechin's calling card while also being a completely weird anomaly in his filmography.
