The Seagull

An overly complicated set of love triangles, quadrangles, pentagons or something where every character is in love with a character who is in love with someone else. There was not a single happy couple. Augment this with a mentally disturbed young man, a few desperate women, and men with despicable morals. Many good moments and lots of very good acting performances. My complaint is with the overarching story which was ultimately hard to enjoy. Worth watching but a crazy ride.

Some good performances (from Bening and especially Moss) still don't justify this movie's baffling existence. Banished back to 1993 on PBS where you belong.

Basically a story of bored, rich, white people whose only talents are in self-sabotage. In a period setting. Bunch of dislikable people screwing each other (over).

Well, it's got enough good lines in it to convince me to read the original play. This should be better, given some great acting from Bening and Moss, and the film isn't afraid to be overdramatic (in a fun way) about unrequited love. But I guess this is all quite piecemeal and doesn't build up much solidity in the characters, and the decision to place parts of the ending at the beginning (to differentiate it from the stage play) is downright jarring and gross.

Entertaining and well acted period piece.
