Following the standard Indie formula: Estranged, emotionally crippled people from dysfunctional families laugh, cry and mature a little, after coming to terms with their own mortality as well as their failure as human beings. Fine performances all around, yo. There's just something about a movie about a writer, who's writing a book about Bertol Brecht, that makes my eye twitch uncontrollably.

Reminded me very much of the never-talked-about, but severely underrated, "You Can Count on Me", in that you have a very unique and un-Hollywood presentation of a realistic brother/sister relationship. And Laura Linney is great in both, by the way. I expected this to be kind of a bummer -- it sounded like the worst kind of indie navel-gazing -- but I was pleasantly surprised to find that wasn't the case. Subtly funny, authentic, well-acted, touching without being maudlin. Great job by Jenkins.

The most overlooked film of 2007 (it was a great year) and one that I could relate to cause of my own grandfather - my dad couldn't even watch it. Should've won best writing oscar, how that piece of shit Juno won I will never know. SUP HOME SKILLET. GREAT WRITING ALERT.

Solid acting, but this is the epitome of tedious indie cinema. A brother and sister (who are both struggling with their liberal arts careers, what other job do people in these films ever have?) must learn to cope with a family drama that brings them closer, teaches them life lessons and bores the hell out of anyone watching.

This only works so well because of Hoffman and Linney being excellent actors. The ending is a little saccharine but is direly needed after what comes beforehand. The only thing that really didn't work was the white guilt scene. After all, who doesn't find blackface funny?

Good cast but the characters and dialogue never really clicked. Difficult subject matter. It managed to be depressing and quirky without ever really hitting any deep, dramatic, touching or funny notes. Conclusion: old age death is not that good, and not that bad. Just like this movie.

Not bad per se- it certainly feels honest& true. So much so it's easy to imagine it's based on writer/director Davis' real life experience.Unfortunately, it plays like she promised herself she would not exploit any of it for cheap sentimentality b/c rarely has a director worked so hard to avoid manipulating the audience's emotions.Hoffman's character also talks about appealing2 reason rather than emotion, but w/out emotional connection it's hard 2 care. W/out it realism translates into banality

Bravo to PSH as he continues to rise up my list of favorite current actors. The movie itself does a very nice job depicting something that happens in lots of families, with an elderly loved one needing to go to a nursing home and the two siblings working together to figure out how to make it work. And as the movie goes the bond between PSH and Linney strengthens. My date had to stop watching it because she didn't enjoy the story, but I came back and finished it. I felt I owed it to them.

Ordinary life is not interesting enough to warrant a movie. It's too dour to be comedic and too "objectively" ordinary to be entertaining. An exercise in film theory rather than an actual film.

Like 2004's Sideways, this is a film that I can't see appealing to anyone but people 40 or over that have suffered through a mid-life crisis. And why the hell are people calling this a comedy? It's just a bleak, straightforward telling of how life sucks when you have to take care of your elderly parents. The only thing that saves this from being completely boring are the performances.

A close observation of the gruesome processes coming for all of us at the end of life is indeed all build with little payoff, but that’s the point; notably absent any death-bed reconciliations between Bosco and his kids, or a sense of growth or self-awareness in its lead characters – it just follows the unstoppable march of mortality and it is the lack of sentimental embellishments which makes it searing and moving. Perfectly pitched “schlubby” performances from Linney, Hoffman and Bosco.

Normally, I really dislike these movies about dysfunctional people, but at least this movie recognizes the fact that they are kinda horrible, rather then trying to convince us that they are just interestingly different. But it got annoying every time the main character was talking about her play and going "It's not pretentious?" and we know it was really the movie's writer asking it of us, the audience. Also, that blackface scene was toe-curling for all the wrong reasons.

I usually have a high tolerance for "slow" films, but with this I found myself glancing at the clock often throughout the second half. I can't point to anything particularly wrong with the script and certainly not the performances --- it just didn't hook me. The bleak subject matter was more depressing than darkly comic -- it's definitely more drama than comedy (though I did laugh out loud on a few occasions).

I love everything Laura Linney is in, and she is especially lovely in this movie. Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman play siblings who have to deal with their aging father after his long time girlfriend dies. The old man (Philip Bosco) is pretty cantankerous and suffering from dementia as his health declines. From there the movie just kind of fizzles out in an effort to show that life goes on. A rather ho-hum ending. Music was not great.

In the hands of less competent actors this might not have been nearly as good as it was. The main characters are as realistic of characters as you will get in a movie and fewer actors than you would think would be able to show the total range that both Linney and Hoffman equally portrayed. The writing was well done in both character development and treading the line between dark humor and drama with near perfection. Get's a bit sappy at the end but overall a very rewarding experience.

Hoffman's and Linney's are big performances in a small film made up of small moments, a life-is-messy comedy of small (but not few) laughs. Jenkins, not heard from since her (subversive, semi-autobiographical) _Slums of Beverly Hills_, seeks the universal in the individual -- the particulars, the peculiarities, the normal abnormalities (the lachrymosity of Hoffman, the mendacity of Linney) -- which is the right way to go about it. The peculiarities needn't have been so artsy-fartsily peculiar.

Two very white people face a crisis that mildly disrupts their very white lives; they even have to throw a 'white guilt' scene in there (sheesh). Thank god they got two of the best talents available for the leads - I absolutely love Linney & Hoffman - just for the chemistry alone this is recommendable. It's a shame they pretty much ditched the humor of this all by the halfway point, but I guess sick people will do that.

I know this was marketed as a dark comedy, and in many instances it is both dark and comic. But there were definitely some parts where the comedy didn't come through, and it was just a kind of depressingly poignant drama. Which is of course, not a bad thing, in fact it's quite well done, with a great script carried by two great leads. Still, I didn't find myself as affected by it as I had hoped, but then I'm probably not it's target audience anyways. Middle-agers might get more out of it.

The Savages was marketed as a quirky, white-people-have-problems-too comedy, and while for the most part that's what it is, it's almost entirely a drama and it works very well because of it. You honestly feel sympathetic for both of the children and their father throughout the whole movie because it's easy to relate to them on at least a surface level. Sure it's not the best movie of 2007, or even one of the best, but it's a very good movie that is easy to recommend to pretty much everyone.

If you want to see Philip Seymour Hoffman and Laura Linney watch Peter Friedman die for two hours, this movie is totally for you. Just an unrelentingly depressing film, with no clear message beyond "dying is no fun for anyone." Pretentious, stereotyped characters, from the unkempt professor to the same I-can't-handle-this-but-maybe-I-can character Linney seems to play in every movie, to the mystically wise black foreigner who can put everything into perspective. This sucked so hard.

The whole film can be described as a big slab of life. Don't look for the scheme of the storytelling to follow a familiar framework. Instead, watch these characters live out a piece of their time. Hoffman's professor defends himself with his pragmatism, alert to criticism but largely too weary to dispense judgment. Linney's struggling playwright is a mountain of vulnerabilities with occasionally reserves of potential fortitude exposed. These pro actors dig into the roles with disciplined gusto.

I'll keep this breif. Linney was nominated for an Academy Award for her role as Phillip Seymour Hoffman's sister in this movie about two siblings dealing with they're dying father. But nothing is lost if you save this for a renter.
Not too mushy, and based on a real experience, I can tell. The little details are much too intimate for this to be a quicky-script. The sub-plot in which Linney is having an affair with a married man for example, at one point he arrives at her door with flowers aft
