I don't know what the director wanted to achieve with this story but the running time makes up for it.

Kind of an enjoyable throwaway. There is no point other then seeing some great acting. Trumpet theme was lame though.

Worth it for D'Onofrio. Pretty good in general.

The acting was exceptional, but the use of flashbacks in telling the story didn't work. The timing of the reveals was off, making the film feel muddled.

Intriguing crime drama starts off exceptionally well, with a delightfully off-beat and absurd sense of humour, but bogs down somewhat in the second half and becomes overly pensive and introspective. Certainly has a lot of fine ingredients; Caruso's eccentric camera angles and directorial choices are very effective, Kilmer is solid in the lead and D'Onofrio is hilarious in a scene-stealing performance; his re-enactment of the Zapruder film must be seen to be believed!

Tries a bit too hard to be clever, and it winds up being a bit of a mess as a result.

A very fine performance from Val Kilmer (and a nice supporting turn from Sarsgaard) are largely wasted in a movie that is far too scatterbrained to have much punch. The movie is all over the place, and not in a way that seems like it's trying to reflect the drug-addled nature of the narrative. It's just a sloppy script, with filler sequences that don't add much of anything to the story. The "mystery" twists and Kilmer in fine form make it worth the watch, but there's potential here to be better.

I did Iove D'Onofrio's scene-stealing turn as the noseless crank dealer Pooh Bear though.

He is a drug addict, a revenge-seeking husband, a snitch, a trumpet player - this film tries to cover too much ground. Many of the characters are very entertaining, but the story just skims along in order to cover everything. The biggest travesty that stuck out in my mind is making a drug addicts life seem so easy and wonderful. It had potential, but it struggled to get anywhere.

Terrific film with fine performances by Kilmer in the lead, the supporting cast is quite good also. Recommended.

Nice little indie film. Great music as is usual from Thomas Newman. The scene with the pigeons is worth the price of admission.

Excellent acting here except for D'Onofrio, who's chewing scenery again. The premise is interesting and original, too. The problem is that the film is all over the place. In a lot of ways it seems to aspire to be Trainspotting, but it doesn't have that cold, dead center of concentrated grief that makes everything else make sense. It doesn't answer a lot of good dramatic questions about Danny or his acquaintances, either, so the wife-remembering sequences have no punch.

Average. Could not figure out if the director was trying to make a serious movie or not. The "What if we stole Bob Hope's stool sample" and "How many bullets are still in the chamber" sequences seemed out of place. The trumpet theme is weak.

Surprisingly good performance from Val Kilmer and the other leads lifts an average movie into the "pretty good" category.

The plot of this movie falls a bit short; however, the characters are very entertaining and unique and memorable. The mood and atmosphere of this film sets it apart from other films. The acting could be a bit better, as well as the story, but it was very watchable. The ending is really rushed.

It's an alright film which tries too hard to convince the viewer how deep and mysterious it is. To be honest, there is almost nothing that makes the film interesting or special.

Val Kilmer gives an excellent performance. Peter Sarsgaard was also good. Chandra West was insanely gorgeous. Almost nobody is what they seem. The raw and dirty drug theme was integral to the story and seemed very realistic. Great production quality and excellent music. A complex, twisty story with many layers. Violent but interesting. And it has a rather poetic ending.

Seemed like the verbose drug noir writing style was forgotten about after the first 3rd & became more to the point when the plot got going. Only to return during some reflective, immersion breaking trumpet scenes. The wheels fell off almost completely during the finale with the wife flashback showing her still being alive albeit briefly & the half-baked plot line with the blonde neighbour becoming suddenly extremely prominent again. Kilmer's brief moments of nihilistic pleasure should be noted.
