I saw this movie on the big screen with a few people including a man who is now a member of federal parliament in Australia. His immediate post-movie declaration was that he enjoyed it immensely and would be very willing to watch it again. He said it with a grin of genuine joy.

A fearful man learns how to kill. The U.S. "powers that be" learn they ought to more properly acknowledge their fallen soldiers. Sean Connery learns that in Hollywood he amounts to an "English prick". The composer learns not to score action movies with music that is rather too jaunty. Cage and Connery learn that in spite of their valiant efforts to ham up their ludicrous roles, they are unable to save an irredeemably preposterous and stupid movie. Michael Bay learns that making money is cool.

I'm not going to say it isn't incredibly stupid, but it's also incredibly fun. The cast is the main reason for this, as Connery, Harris and Cage are clearly much better actors than this sort of material is worth (well, Cage has his moments, anyway). A couple memorable action sequences (the Humvee chase in particular), and great lines like "I'ma take pleasure in guttin' you, BOI!" and Connery's famous quip about "your best". I tend to forget this is a Michael Bay film, because it's actually good.

Sorkin and Tarantino were uncredited script doctors on this and you can see their fingerprints all over it - the mexican standoffs, the syringes to the heart, the way every other line has to be super intense but blasé at the same time. It's ridiculous and dumb but Cage makes it fun with his shtick of yelling the last word of every sentence. I'll watch that dude in anything.

While on the surface a masturbatory action extra-f***in'-ganza, The Rock is truly an example of the zenith of its (albeit stupid) genre, mostly thanks to the chemistry between its leads and Ed Harris' multi-layered villain. At what it is and what it does, The Rock does them both well.

For all his many flaws, Bay does have a knack for explosions and action scenes. The Rock is the one movie where he doesn't take himself the slightest bit seriously, which is pretty much the only way he's watchable. Therefore, this is watchable.

I DESPISE Michael Bay (as so many do), but I remember thinking this was a great action movie. The villains weren't stupid and Bay hadn't immatured into his full-on horribleness yet. I think that would only take ..the next film? Although I believe Bad Boys gave me a headache.

The Rock to be fair is Michael Bay's best work to date. It may not be a groundbreaking piece of filmmaking, but admittedly I love this melodramatic & jingoistic action film. Sean Connery gives his last decent performance and there are theories that suggest he is actually James Bond here. Which is far fetched but still a pleasing thought. But Nicholas Cage is Nicholas Cage, enough said. The Rock may be dumb and over the top, but it's a lot of fun and one of my favourite action films of the 90's.

Bio weapons, Alcatraz, ex-spies and army commanders: The Rock is one of my all-time favourite action films. I was 16 when it came out, and still love the story, the action and the interaction of the characters. It showcases the threat that military weaponry could potentially pose if it falls into the wrong hands. Action and adventure that drives at a very good pace throughout.

Nicolas Cage level: 3000. A gratuitous, rip-roaring ride through a world where Ed Harris is a domestic terrorist with a very salient point, Sean Connery gets a mid-movie makeover, and the bowels of Alcatraz somehow transform into the Temple of Doom.

The Rock is easily Michael Bay's best, or only good film. Sure, it has the same themes Michael Bay tends to have like "America!" and "Fuck everything else, believe only in AMERICA!" but it was one of his earliest ones, and it was acceptable. The Rock is really enjoyable, and a pretty decent action flick. But Michael Bay sucks here on out.

The Rock is a very, very fun action movie. It's relentlessly paced, filled with action scenes from start to finish, and while it doesn't always link them with logic, the aforementioned pacing doesn't allow you time to think about them. It has two lead actors who we care about, and a villain possibly more sympathetic than any other character, played with intensity. It's absolutely worth watching, and a shining example of what Michael Bay is capable of.

The Rock is not the smartest film out there, but that's what you've got to expect from director Michael Bay. You can also expect great action and over the top acting jobs, and that's just what you get. Connery is as great as he always is, and Nic Cage is a dry and annoying as he always is. It all comes together to make a big messy, yet fun, explosion of a film. Pretty good!

A typical Michael Bay movie with all of the usual shitty dialogue, forced witty one liners, and awkward camera work. The difference here is that The Rock has a cast that's top to bottom great in a lot of areas (seriously, even the B listers like Bokeem Woodbine and William Forsythe are good), and that makes up for a lot. It's an enjoyable movie (and not just for a Michael Bay flick), but don't get sucked into any talk of it being a classic.

I want to give Michael Bay credit, but let's face it: had anybody else dropped a line like "I'm only borrowing your humvee!" but Connery, it would've been retarded and stupid, like everything else Bay's ever done. Michael Bay's best film by some margin. I think it succeeds on the strength of a truly rousing score by Hans Zimmer, lots of big guns and cool military gadgets, and some really fun locations. All of the actors ham it up atrociously as if in competition with each other, but the standout actors both add a little extra grit into their performances: Ed Harris and Sean Connery. The worst thing about the film is all those army men being given lines of dialogue. Still, a guilty pleasure action film.

Nick Cage was likable enough as the bumbling weapons agent, and Sean Connery did a great job playing Sean Connery. Lots of big booms and ridiculous sfx in true Michael Bay style. Also lots of painful clichés and completely superfluous female characters who are vapid, unsympathetic, and who, combined, spend less than 10 minutes onscreen. Guys will love it.

Cage follows up his Oscar win with a big-budget action hero turn, with great results. Like most Simpson/Bruckheimer productions, credibility is stretched to the limit, but the action scenes and crisp pacing don't leave much time for pondering details, anyway. Connery, cool as ever, hasn't lost a step. Cage effectively plays up his character's inexperience at being the hero. Co-producer Don Simpson died of drug overdose during production.

Mercenaries take over Alcatraz and make terrorist threats, so an old man and a lab geek are sent in to save the day. This movie actually has a decent script and cast...all the makings of a fun, cheesy action flick are there. However, every shot of the movie is so packed with Michael Bayisms (hyperkinetic spinning camera work, oversaturated oranges and blues, incoherently edited action butted up against overly melodramatic moments in super slow motion, etc) that it's pretty terrible to watch.

An action packed guilty pleasure full of the usual jingoistic imagery and Michael Bay military fetishism. However underneath it all there's a surprisingly subversive message. This is a guilty pleasure all the way but just the hilariously delivered dialog from Sean Connery raises this up quite a bit. Nicolas Cage is well..Nicolas Cage in this movie but he's also more entertaining rather than grating like he usually is.

This is entertaining, with some amusing moments coming from Connery's characters dialogue - one such example being 'your between the rock and a hard case'. It features plenty in the way of fast paced action scenes, with numerous explosions, destruction of property and vehicles, chases on foot and car etc. there are, however, a fair number of cliches/cheesy aspects too, like the main character having a love interest who just so happens to be in San Francisco when things get bad etc. Its ok.

This movie defines what Michael Bay would become as a director. The movie has a loose military connection, over the top explosions, and plenty of the usual masculine bravado. The villains motivations are ridiculous, their demands petty, and their understanding of the conflicts they mention narrowed to make US soldiers the only victims. The movie is a parody of itself, and I have no idea how much of it was intentional. There is a charm to it.
