The story is about two swindlers who get their hands on a map to the fabled city of gold, El Dorado while pulling off some sort of scam. Their plan goes bad and the rogues end up lost at sea after a number of misfortunes. Oddly enough, they end up on the shores of El Dorado and are worshiped by the natives for their foreign appearance. (imdb)

Typical and boring DreamWorks animation production. Tries hard to be like Disney, but failed. Maybe it's that I don't like American animation in general. I did think that Kline and Branagh give decent voice performances, but they're better off somewhere else.

The Road to El Dorado was the first movie to show the real promise of Dreamworks. The story was fun and interesting. It was aimed well at a kids audience. There were a few moments where the themes might have been more mature that I liked for my six-year-old but they weren't a problem. The voice acting was very good. I loved hearing Rosie Perez in her role. The music is really the star of the show in this movie. The Elton John soundtrack has so many bangers that it can be enjoyed anytime.

Based on the title, I was expecting an adventurous journey through the jungle, but that only lasted like ten minutes. The songs don't land and the plot is rehashed. But there is some strong comedic timing and solid laughs.

I thought that this was a quite fun animation / family film, and on par with what Disney was doing around the same time. It's very colorful and nicely animated; the South American setting is refreshing. As is often case, I thought the songs were not needed, but there's not too many of those. The characters were also fun - Miguel & Tulio had good balance and Chei was a pretty unique female character in the genre. I think the script was the weakest point and kept it from rising to the next level.

I dug this as a kid, but it doesn't hold up to memory. A lot of "highlights" still entertain, chiefly succeeding due to two very likeable and charismatic protagonists. It's a charming story, with plenty of humour & decent setpieces; but it rarely stops to let beats settle or for the audience to feel the impact of key moments. If it sacrificed some of the - not one, not two, but three - Elton John song montages, then maybe there would have been more space for a solid connection to form.

Not without a decent number of good jokes. But the characterization, structure, and pacing are really strange and uneven. The whole main plot is eye-rollingly stereotypical, and while it isn't played completely straight, that's just because it's so oddly pieced together.

A fairly big letdown, even considering it's a kids' movie. The anticlimactic ending (after fighting the canine Iron Giant!) feels like they ran out of budget and avoided a big encounter between the natives and the armored Spaniards. The CG was primitive but not distracting. The camaraderie between the friends was nice (and apparently axed a more romantic relationship). Surprised to read that Chel originally had an even skimpier outfit. Forgettable songs. Fav scene: horse getting the keys.

A feel good film, great for literally any situation. The two or three songs with lyrics are well done. THe dynamic between Tulio and Miguel is great, and the comedy is generally well done. The priest guy is creepy though.

Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio prove here that they have a knack for clever and enjoyable writing even in the animated world. The voice acting is fantastic and the story is well worth sticking around for. The only issue could be that the run time does not allow for enough character growth.

It's a refreshing animated movie because it drifts away from the typical story, also is very funny and has lovely characters. It doesn't have this dramatic side that most animated movies have, which is not bad, but it doesn't fill this void with something else.

I'm always amazed that this is one of DreamWorks' least successful pictures, both financially and in terms of reviews. It's like The Emperor's New Groove, except even funnier - not to mention the rockin' Elton John soundtrack and some great deliveries from some great comedians. I find this as quotable as any Monty Python movie. (And I love the random gay undertones between the two main characters - who, incidentally, were originally lovers before the studio execs got skittish.)

Branagh and Kline offer excellent voice performances as two lowly conmen who track down the legendary City of Gold. This comedy adventure is awash with fun characters, witty dialogue, good songs and imaginative animation, and is a real treat for children and adults alike.

I expected something pretty lame judging by the trailers but this wasn't so bad. The plot alone won't convince many people to watch it -- it's very unoriginal. But it's cute and enjoyable enough and it has some amusing moments that help salvage it. Overall, it's a time-pass movie and not a bad one.

The songs are kinda weak, and the story moves exceptionally well from one adventure to the next. I was pleased the picture did not ignore that viewers might have a brain in the head, & only lingered during the songs.
