After amusements working in a restaurant, Charlie uses his lunch break to go roller skating. Mr. Stout makes advances toward the unwilling Edna (whose father and Mrs. Stout had earlier carried on in the restaurant). After a roller skate ballet, Charlie (now as Sir Cecil Seltzer) is invited to a party at Edna's. All the "couples", including a new partner for Mr. Stout. show up. (imdb)

The roller skating footage shows once again just how athletic Chaplin was despite his sometimes bumbling persona. Some of the slapstick choreography is top notch, but there's not much here outside of the comedy. There's the old gag where characters are running back and forth through doors just missing each other here--I wonder where that originated.

While the restaurant scenes feel a little stale, the rink sequences show some amazing physicality and choreography. But even that starts to feel a little repetitive after a while.

I actually prefer the material in the restaurant for it's cheeky physical comedy, and the set design and camerawork make the action easy to follow over several different sets. The skating stuff is fun and is more of a showcase for Chaplin's physicality if not his humor, but overall this is a nice Chaplin short.

Not a particularly strong Chaplin comedy. It's funny at times but a lot of the gags feel forced and drawn out and there's not much core outside of them to hang on to like there is in Chaplin's best work.

The restaurant scenes aren't as funny as those at the skating rink - the ridiculous physical comedy and stunts mixed with skilled skating are impressive, even by modern standards. (Available on Netflix.)

Chaplin had learned to roller skate for a bit while with Fred Karno's troupe, and his athletic ease is a joy to behold. Only Gene Kelly in IT'S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER comes close.
