This breezy, pleasant comedy with considerable wit and some laugh-out-loud moments is the fourth collaboration of actor Hugh Grant and writer-director Marc Lawrence, and it is almost as good as "Words and Music." Once again Grant plays a premature curmudgeon hiding his emotional vulnerability beneath a superficial sexism and general crankiness. Marisa Tomei is charming as his love interest, and J.K. Simmons and Allison Janney are superb in supporting roles.

Objectively, The Rewrite is predictable and mediocre by most standards; however as a Hugh Grant film this works in its favour. Hugh Grant is one of a few actor who can pull of misogyny and still come across as funny and likeable. This film delivers on that, especially in the first act which is chock-full of jokes. The sentimentality is turned up thereafter, but the film remains funny and easily watchable, even if all the characters are nothing more than caricatures.

This movie is underpinned by the cliche story and character mechanisms it harps on, and if that's irony it doesn't work. It's blind and clueless. But bad movies also need to be seen, right. Could be worse, especially because Hugh Grant has always been such a trustworthy, warm presence throughout my whole life

Yet another film in which Hugh Grant plays, well, Hugh Grant again. Fun and easy going e. And all Englishmen visiting the States must recognise the spin off benefits to them!

Why did Hugh Grant sign on to make a film that's essentially a carbon copy of "Music & Lyrics" in a different setting, with a slightly more grating character? He is capable in his role, but also capable of so much more. The writing on this film is insipid and almost every character is a walking cliché. The writer Lawrence (of many other classics) needs to stop making films about attractive but selfish individuals who need to learn a lesson. Inoffensive but totally forgettable.

Hugh Grant seems to be able to make any film at least watchable, including this otherwise dull affair. I've never been a fan of Marisa Tomei.
