The Return of Godzilla

I think 2014 Godzilla was partly inspired by this one as was Shin Godzilla. However I feel Toho took a bit too long to make a new movie and it kind of shows. I prefer anti-hero Godzilla the best. Hero Godzilla is fun and goofy and villain Godzilla is properly menacing.

Hoping to forget some of the lesser entries, this reboot of the franchise brings back an angry Godzilla, one who will push a building on those little humans when warranted. Like many of the other films, we get a lot of (too much?) explanation to make this "real" -- including some interesting political moments. Some decent-enough effects as Big Green stomps around, but I'm surprised they didn't use that lice thing from the opening a bit more.

The ending is remarkably poignant, with beautiful lush strings playing a weeping melody as accompaniment to the harrowingly beautiful images of Godzilla falling into a volcano. James Cameron definitely watched this before making T2. A shame then that the rest of the movie is pretty slow and boring.
