Baron Manfred von Richthofen (Schweighöfer) is the most feared and celebrated pilot of the German air force in WW I. To him and his companions, air combats are events of sporty nature, technical challenge and honorable acting, ignoring the terrible extent of war. But after falling in love with the nurse Käte (Headey), Manfred realizes he is only used for propaganda means. Caught between his disgust for the war, and the responsibility for his fighter wing, von Richthofen sets out to fly again. (imdb)

The Red Baron loses any sense of direction by covering too wide a spectrum of narratives: his relationship with a nurse, his friendship with an enemy pilot, his disenchantment with being propaganda; its many little themes touched on but never fully explored, with no specific focus punctuated by aerial battles sequences with little context, relevance and no sense of pacing. Almost like watching a well made, high budget miniseries thats been clumsily edited into to a single film.

It's a bit pointless movie, just telling a story about a legend. Still i didn't get bored. Liked the atmospere.

While the film is visually impressive, the writing and direction are glaring weak points. Most of the dialog seems to try hard to glorify pilots, to make them seem more "gentlemanly" for some reason. There are far too many subplots, leaving little time to show German air strategy and tactics. Air battles have no context. The viewer gets hardly any information about what the Germans are planning because the director would rather show people eating, drinking, flirting and making small talk.

The photography was epic, quick, and smooth. The aerial shots were absolutely impressive and the quality of the subject matter was amazing. It was full of tasteful action and, the acting was great and the lead performance could not have been given better by any actor of that age that I have ever seen. The plot was lacking in points, as are many true stories, but there was no real fault in the points that it contained. Over all it's a necessary watch for anyone who watches basically anything.

Excellent film! Red Barron really was the modern version of Achilles, a warrior who'd risen to such epic proportions he was actually believed to be immortal. Matthias Schweighöfer plays the Red Baron, a sportsman (even in combat) a noble, passionate, gentleman. It's a film you just have to see. This is our Achilles, don't miss the legend.

This is a sad, sorry example of a war film. Any resemblance to actual historical events must surely only be co-incidental. What dull acting. What a poor script. What obvious computer generated aircraft.

Riesengrosser mist aus eigenen Landen. Grauenvolle schauspielerische leistung und eine völlig an den haaren herbei gezogene geschichte. allenfalls fürs abendprogramm zu gebrauchen

Feels a bit flat and pointless. The script is just totting along minding its own business while the characters remains uninteresting.

The interesting movie with some quite good visual effects. It is not the same as typical history and action Hollywood film. The story is interesting and catchy and gets the feeling of reality. The mixed cast was also surprisingly good though some characters were little flat.
