The Rape of Europa is an epic journey through seven countries that follows the violent whirlwind of fanaticism, greed, and warfare, which threatened to wipe out the artistic heritage of Europe. For 12 long years, the Nazis looted and destroyed art on an unprecedented scale in history. But heroic young art historians and curators from America, as well as across Europe, fought back. They did so in a miraculous campaign to rescue then return the millions of lost, hidden, and stolen treasures. (Menemsha)

A side of World War II was shown that I had previously been unaware of, the destruction and theft of art and the effects it can have on the world.

An incredibly powerful documentary that uncovers a cost of World War II that is often forgotten: the destruction, theft and loss of incredible works of art. The documentary always remains grounded and acknowledges that, to soldiers' fighting for their lives, the preservation of art barely enters their minds, and understandably so, while still providing you with the grand picture of just how much of the world's art will never be recovered again due to World War II.

It's a bit all over the place (focus wise), but nonetheless mandatory viewing if you're at least slightly interested in WW2 and its effect on history.

Boo. This could have been produced for the History Channel. I almost said PBS, but PBS documentaries are goddamn amazing. It's like a dry TV documentary in the worst possible way.

It's not right that someone be allowed to take as fascinating and important topic as this and present it in such a lifeless, dispassionate, and utterly dull way.

"As the directors cogently and captivatingly illustrate, the Americans' acts of preservation and the Nazis' destructiveness and inquisitiveness both, ultimately, confirm art's status as an intrinsic, defining facet of national identity." - Nick Schager
