Interesting story and themes but the telling was a little off and Mel(odramatic) Gibson didn't help... C

What an acting duo... Although the story sounds extremely lame if you'd read a summary, it really is not boring at all. There is one scene in the movie I rather they'd not shown, it really grosed me out eventhough you don't even see it happening. It really is a beautiful love story and a great movie about friendship. Very good performance, even for that time. Big applause to the filmmakers, but using this talent really helps to build the movie.

More interesting than it sounds and quite handsomely produced on a modest scale, but it is a conventional historical drama that is played completely straight, despite its somewhat unusual title. Gibson is decent in an understated role while Penn's acting varies wildly in quality. Both are upstaged by their old man beards and alcoholic noses.

About resentment, guilt, and forgiveness and redemption that means nothing but cosmic warmth and justice beyond law. Also some interesting points about tertiary retention: how the editing of a dictionary as a part of tertiary retention constituted colonial sovereignty, and how communication network and the press enabled the creation of a collective memory that couldn't be imagined before (Wikipedia is another example), while also spreading and intensifying collective resentment and stupidity.

I was fascinated by this movie. And not only because of their imposing beards.

Sean Penn and Mel Gibson in the battle of the beards (Mel famously with such a good Scottish accent you can see why he's typecast).

It may be cliched and a bit hokey at times, but the tale of how the Oxford English Dictionary came to be is a fascinating one. It doesn't take too many liberties with the truth, and when it does it serves to bring everything together in a dramatically satisfying way. It's also competently shot, and Penn and Gibson act their little hearts out. While this movie's certainly no masterpiece it deserved more exposure than it got.
