New York, 1959. Max Bialystock was once the king of Broadway, but now all his shows close on opening night. Things turn around when he's visited by the neurotic accountant Leo Bloom, who proposes a scheme tailor-made for producers who can only make flops: raise far more money than you need, then make sure the show is despised. No one will be interested in it, so you can pocket the surplus. To this end, they produce a musical called Springtime for Hitler written by escaped Nazi Franz Liebken... (imdb)

I really enjoyed this! I mostly really liked all of the acting. Gary Beach was definitely the stand-out here, but Nathan Lane was hilarious and Matthew Broderick was clearly having a good time as well. Uma Thurman was stunning and funny. It takes a little while to get going, and the ending is rather safe, but I enjoyed all of the music and even remember some of it weeks after watching. The satire and humor just worked well for me. It isn’t perfect by any means, but certainly worth the trip!

It was outrageous, insulting, and I loved every minute of it. Then they got to opening night and I saw their show: it was the most insanely wonderful thing I've ever seen on screen. No point in listing all the great performances: seems like every actor steals every scene they're in. It's a monument to *written* comedy, and a blow against the peculiarly American idea that you can take a naff script and that great comedians will be able to improvise it into greatness once filming begins.

i liked it and i laughed most of the way through. it stumbles getting started. there are a lot of jokes that don't cut it in the midst of the ones that do. it runs a little longer than it should. overall minor grips to the whole, but enough to keep it below an 80. ferrel's ridiculous style of brusque shouting humor has probably never been better suited for a film than it was for this one.

Matthew Broderick is meh in general for me, I can't really remember liking anything he's ever been in ever (Ferris Bueller and Lion King are the exceptions, but neither of those am I a fan of because of him). The ensemble cast hold it together very well, Nathan Lane of course stealing the spotlight as the flamboyant director. And y'know, I never thought I'd say this - but I didn't dislike Will Ferrell in this movie! It's a rare treat to not cringe in embarrassment at seeing him on film. See it!

If this had been a straight remake of the 1968 film with a few songs thrown in, I might have enjoyed it. Yes, it would have been totally unnecessary, but most of the songs are alright and Lane does a fine job with the part of Max. Instead, they reconfigured the film to center around Leo, turned his character into a pathetic loser... and selected a man who hasn't given a decent film performance in over a decade for the part. Broderick is simply awful and the entire film suffers because of it.

It's kind of unfair to compare this to the 1968 film. That being said, the 1968 film is much better. Basically I didn't like Broderick that much as Leo Bloom. Gene Wilder sold his manic neurosis more believably. Listen, the music is pretty good and it's still very funny, but the 1968 version is one of my favourite comedies of all time. In this movie the music and production value got a step up but the performances took a step down. Still solid, but I say watch the original instead.

Uma shines. The rest not so much. The hit-and-miss quirkiness and neurosis of the original were the product of its time, but this remake does not have that excuse. In addition it fails to add anything new and is just inferior in almost every way except the photography. Not the least I suspect that Hitler as a comedic vehicle used to be a much more scandalous concept than today, when you can see it in any 30 min sitcom.

I usually don't like musicals. They lack the cohesiveness I can get from an album or film and thus they can barely keep my attention. The Producers is different because it doesn't take itself seriously like most others from the genre. The humour is rampant throughout and makes it a joy to watch.

Sure, you might warm up to the overdone performances by the time Will Ferrell shows up, but that doesn't make the movie itself any better or funnier. On the contrary, it putters along, struggling to not dull the audience. Lane has some good moments, but the only real laughs come from Will Ferrell. Sadly, he's not in it nearly enough to save us.

Preface by saying that I've not seen the original. A film that is funnier as an idea that it is in its execution. The cast are all fine, but the film as a whole strains too much for laughs and meaningful satire (an issue I have with Brooks' films).

A movie musical about a musical, based on a musical, based on a movie about a musical. This version of Mel Brooks' comedy classic may leave fans of the original missing the brilliant performance of Gene Wilder as well as the tight paced comedy of Mel Brooks' original Academy Award winning screenplay. However, for fans of the record Tony Award winning 2001 Broadway adaptation, this film at least brings stars Nathan Lane and Mathew Broderick to reprise their roles on the big screen.

There's a couple of scenes in here that make it worth it, but for the most part, just stick with the original movie from the 60s. If you like musicals (like I do), stick with the Original Broadway Cast Recording that isn't ruined by Uma Thurman and Will Ferrell not really being able to sing. It still has Lane and Broderick - giving better performances, I might add. Or, just see the stage show. Really, there's lots better options than this low-rent adaptation.

Broadrick and Lane deliver great performances in this film adaptation of the musical adaptation of a film. Despite its triumphant comedy, it lacks the spark Brooks' original and Will Ferrell delivers another of his amazingly unfunny performances as Franz Liebkind, the writer and director behind Springtime for Hitler. Maybe if Brooks directed instead of produced this might've been better, but he already directed it in 1968 so what's the point.

Sexy as Hell, funny as crap, and as twisted as a musical can be. I don't like musicals. I loved this one. Who knew Hitler could be so funny. This in-your-face Fuery of comedy is as satisfying comedically as Inglorious Basterds is violently at giving the finger to Nazi Germany. I relished every scene and the hilarious actors who carried to comedy with effortless style. Not evenly paced and bit long, but worth your full attention. And Uma Thurman turns sexy into an artform.

The main complaint from the critics is that it's just not enough to put the play straight up on the big screen. But I felt that they overlooked a few virtues, mainly the use of color. One scene that starts the third act in particular stands out. It does kinda deserve the vitriol its getting but I can't say I didn't enjoy myself.

It's quite humourous in sections and less so in others. Nathan Lane is certainly the highlight of this version of The Producers, though Roger Bart is worthy of note as well. Frankly I've never been a huge fan of Broderick but he does provide an ample performance. The problem with the film is, once you've seen it live, the movie just doesn't suffice. There is something different about seeing Spring Time for Hitler as a live musical that just can't be captured with film.

A movie that became a musical that became a movie again. Some things were lost in translation somewhere along the way, but no matter: others have been gained. This one plays like one of the old-time movie-musicals - a rarity these days and a real treat. The songs are catchy and the performances are mostly hilarious, though Broderick initially seems desperate to channel Gene Wilder. It starts off feeling very cheesy, but once you get into the on-stage feel of it it's great. Every single character is infinitely lovable. The songs are great. And springtime for hitler? Stroke of genius. It's not as good as the original (Gene Wilder is hard to outshine), but it's still very pleasant and it being a musical helps a lot. The end isn't very good, and it drags on for about 15-20 minutes longer than it should, but it's still great.
