Douglas Fairbanks Sr. makes his big-screen swan song with Korda's deliciously satiric deflation of the Don Juan myth. After having faked his own death and escaped Seville, the aging lothario returns, only to find that he has been promptly forgotten; perhaps Merle Oberon's raven-haired beauty can coax him back into business. Don Juan was a rare "talkie" for Fairbanks, and a shrewd poking at the actor's own persona. (criterion.com)

I suppose this was a fun, meta going-away party for Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. He had fun making it and his fans had fun watching it. I'm not sure it has aged all that well though. I mean, it's not *bad* but it certainly seemed tedious at times. Perhaps if we look at it as a period piece and enjoy it for that...with its misogyny and it thinking 51 is "old", it becomes interesting. But only viewed from that arm's length to film historians would I recommend this to someone.

A pretty decent option when in the mood for easy, brief, light amusement.

Slight, but it's a fun take on Don Juan.

The deterioration and humiliation of the legend of Don Juan! The balcony climbing lover is getting older and starting too feel it. I guess this was how Douglas Fairbanks Sr. felt in real life. And he shows he's got a great sense of self irony with this performance. His farewell performance end on a strong note with his best talkie. My favorite Fairbanks are "When the Clouds Roll by (1919)", "Robin Hood (1922)" and "The Thief of Bagdad (1924)", but there must be over 20 other great ones he made!
