Extremely nostalgic; images of American life when baseball was King and Gehrig was the quintessential American hero. It's a heart-warming love story, if not occasionally over-sweet in its presentation, but also crushing to witness Cooper's subtle handling of Gehrig's early symptoms and diagnosis. Released so shortly after Gehrig's death, there's not much information that was available about ALS, but it certainly prompts some investigation for modern viewers. The final scenes always choke me up.

Like most films from the era it's insanely overacted and sappy but it's still a great story Cooper and his normal modest stoicism fits in perfectly here.

The role of the courtly baseball hero fit Cooper like a baseball glove; his rendition of Gehrig's farewell speech at Yankee Stadium is a classic movie scene.

In need of a trim and the real life baseball figures are not integrated that well into the story (plus, what IS with that Velez and Yolanda dance number?), the film is regardless a sublime example of classic Hollywood mythmaking. At its core, this is a tragic romance that balances melodrama with surprising humor. There are no messy fights or gimmicks here, really. Just a story of uprightness and devotion. Cooper is at his hesitant best and Wright also excels. The tears are definitely earned.

Good film, classic. A bit aged now, but still pretty touching.

A love story / classic tragedy that happens to involve baseball and one of its most esteemed legends.

WEBRIP RARBG.

A bit too much love story and not enough baseball for me, but I can see why fans generally rate this as a good movie. It's set in a time where we actually preferred to have heroes (rather than now, when we seem to enjoy tearing them down). Who can stay dry-eyed for that final speech? Not this Red Sox fan. (I'm slightly disappointed that the extras on the DVD didn't include the real speech.)

I get that Lou Gehrig was a great baseball player, but The Pride of the Yankees (1942) doesn't do the man justice. They basically put his career in the background while making a film about a sweet and caring family man. I know reasons for that is that Gary Cooper couldn't play baseball and would have been easily exposed, so they just focused on what Cooper did best, and that was a goofy lovable character charming his way through yet another movie. Sure, that works....

While falling well and truly into the typical Golden Age Hollywood Biopic category, the sincerity of it's fine cast sells it - Cooper in particular is excellent as Gehrig, and Brennan is also fine as his confidant and friend. Some unexplored narrative digressions are frustrating (eg. his unhealthily close relationship with his mother) and there is too often a tendency to go full bore hagiography on its subject. Legendary final speech is a true show stopper.

A bit sappy but otherwise a pretty good biopic with a lighter tone than you might expect.

A cliched "greatest hits" biopic typical of its time that is impossible not to like because it is so impeccably directed and has such lovable performances from Gary Cooper and Teresa Wright.

I'm sure Gehrig was a nice guy in general, but this movie makes him seem almost Christ-like in the way he lived his life and behaved. Besides that, the movie did drag in the middle. There is, however, a great performance by Cooper and he captures the emotion of Gehrig's downfall very well. I don't think the movie is great, but it was good.

This movie hasn't aged as well as a lot of other classics. The final scene is fantastic, and there are some other nice bits throughout, but it drags and there's a lot in it that comes off more hokey than nostalgic today.

For years I had this ranked pretty high, just based on memory. I saw it again recently and it took a major hit in my book. I hate to say it, but this is a one scene movie if there ever was one. Cooper is very good, yes. But there is ALOT of filler here, and not much of it is very interesting. "The Speech" is outstanding, and I love still love it, but you'll have to wade through quite a bit of FF-worthy material to get there.
