The Postman's White Nights

Konchalovsky tries not to overstate the romantic and sublime inherent to the rural life by presenting the dull and repetitive as well, which is worthy. However, despite the ingenuously constructed disfunctional family comprised of Postman, widow and her son, the search for a transendence ends up inchoate and my final feeling tells me that despite its poignancy at times, this movie stays as a somewhat shallow essay of elegy to rural life and sublime in nature. Decent.

Just the kind of film for which I always say that we live in the Golden Age of filmmaking: where not everywhere looks like an American suburb yet, but film technology is cheap and omnipresent enough for these places to actually make it into movies. This one gives us amazing shots of life in remote Russia, even if a bit too showy for its own good at times (rare for me to say that!). The story really is of secondary importance.

Ultimately, this seems to be about the way in which different ways of life (life in different technical systems or different parts of a technical system) involves different ways of noticing or not noticing one's milieu (different ways of perceiving), a little bit like the way in which the natives in THE THIN RED LINE seem not to notice soldiers passing on their way to battle. Perhaps nothing outstanding, but something seems to be going on here. A long way from TANGO & CASH.
