I did not expect something so slight from the talent on display here.

Nicholson and Lange are both winners, and their relationship is bizarre and intriguing. The movie goes on for a little too long though.

Compelling drama. Beautifully made. Casting isn't exactly believable, but could be worse. Watch it if you can.

(Viewed on 09/08/11): Rafelson and Nicholson's partnership fell into decline with their remake of T.P.A.R.T, an uninspired workmanlike affair that wastes the talent of all involved. Nicholson was presumably cast for his name because he doesn't really fit the role. He has some chemistry with Lange, and the sex scenes are suitably intense and steamy, but it's inferior to both Visconti's Ossessione and Feher's Passion, which are far more interesting interpretations of the same material.

Every time I watch a version of this story I like it less. Nicholson's performance feels off, like he's playing every scene on its own terms without a broader picture of the character. Maybe that's the idea, that his character is an empty vessel who can't look ahead or behind more than a few hours? Didn't really work for me. Lange's is not quite as flighty, but it's in that area. Even if this is intentional, these aren't characters I care about, and even the passion feels manufactured.

Considering the fact that it's a remake of a classic, it's not bad.

Boring snooze fest. I didn't care about anything and anyone in this remake, but at least it had Jacky and sexy Jessica.

Lange and the sex scenes are terrific in this poorly executed pseudo-noir.

I haven't yet seen the more renowned 1946 version, but this is certainly inferior to Visconti's Ossessione, the first (and looser) adaptation of the novel. The story is sleazy but not bad, quite engaging. Nicholson and Lange are good but the supporting cast uneven, and Rafelson's directing is not on par with his best work. The photography is too static and there's even something off about the lighting in many scenes.
