As horror films go, The Possession is quite a strong one. It avoids common pitfalls - the tedium of The Pact, the hilarious over-mythologising of Paranormal Activity 3, the all-round irredeemable shittiness of The Devil Inside - and ratchets up the tension quite effectively. Performances are strong, and the screenplay is reasonably well thought-out. It's certainly not a great movie, but if you're into mainstream horror movies, it's a wonderful surprise after a year of disappointments.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again... 90% of all horror films are shite, and the only reason I watch them is so that I can feel manly in front of the missus and make a little fun by scaring the crap out of her during and after the film... And why oh why are they all "based on a true story"? Base this (fuckfinger given to screen) on a true story!

About as unoriginal as you can get as far as possession films go. It's all here; rubbish parents, moody teen girls, washed out colour, priests, parent googling demons, token creepy mirror shot, sustained tension hooks, MacGuffin box (that is a ruse), exorcism, shit ending. I could probably list more. Points go to the few creepy scenes that are well executed, but this is nothing you haven't seen a dozen times before. BASED ON A TRUE STORY too... Even the bit where a demon climbs out of his FACE!

dude, the title isn't even original. that should have been my first clue to just rewatch amityville horror or the exorcist or poltergeist or hellraiser instead of this watered down, derivative slime. BIG TWIST? IT'S A JEWISH EXORCISM INSTEAD OF A CATHOLIC ONE!!

Imagine every possession movie you've ever seen, populate it with mostly unlikable characters who act in ways that only characters in a movie ever do, and add in a magical rabbi who is introduced by fourth-wall-breaking reggae. Wash it all out with some terrible visual filters and throw in a slightly awkward scene of a teenage girl dancing, and my friend, you have wasted less time imagining this film than I did watching it.

Came here from The Vigil, which handled the mysticism and suspense much better. Standard light horror which wastes a good Macguffin coming from the Jewish or Hasidic culture, although I don't know the accuracy of the representation.

Little girls screaming, little girls screaming everywhere. One feels sorry for the father, especially with the way the mother treats him. The lore reveal and the ending were not the best as the ploy is an old one and the new twist feels off

It actually quite good until the last 10 minutes or so when the whole thing goes into cartoon territory with some really bad CGI.

This average "possessed by demons" horror movie is fullfilling every cliché there is including the obligatory exorcism to save this stupid girl.

Yet another "scare-em-by-numbers" horror film, filled with all the usual stylistic conventions - eerie sounds, sombre piano plinks, slow zooms, and the odd jump shock cut to frighten you. In this weak attempt, most everything misses the mark. The characters are devoid of personality; there is no originality in the story or its details. The suspense is wholly lacking and is never successfully brought to a satisfying climax. Ole Bornedal should stick to something he does better than horror films.

The only thing that really keeps this intriguing is the fact it's based on an LA Times article. Read that, then watch it, and you'll still only be mildly satisfied. Granted, it could've been much worse, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan's performance was satisfying, as always.

The depiction of the family is the only reason to watch this film on excorcism, but the horror flick could have benefited from a less-is-more approach.

Really great characters and relationships fleshed out before the horror gets started and better acting than most horror movies have. However the horror element leaves something to be desired. Not a great arc to the story.

A very important film. It's about time someone knocked those Catholics down a peg or two. Other religions can exorcise too you greedy turds!
