This movie has some good performances in it, especially from the leads. The character that Eric Roberts plays gets annoying after awhile. The script isn't perfect but it has some good moments, most of the characters are unlikable Overall I would recommend this film..

Was later adapted into Rain Man, though I may be the only one that sees that clearly.

Italian Stereotypes: The Movie. While these kinds of larger than life people do exist & are entertaining to watch for a while, the filmmakers never seem to tire of the repetitive "You're a screw-up!" back & forth occasional scenery chewing between the 2 leads. The badboy w/ a heart of gold also starts to seem like implausible wish fulfillment & the last half hour of waiting for a mobster to take revenge may be meant to be suspenseful, but is tiresome. The happy ending also makes little sense.

"ayyy! ohhh! come on, Paulie! don't play wit him! capiche?" says Mickey Rourke while snapping his fingers and listening to Frank Sinatra.

I was expecting some popes in this one. Spoiler: not a single pope in the movie. Instead, Mickey Rourke and Eric Roberts at their sexiest.

I adored this movie in high school/college, and for the life of me I can't figure out why. Essentially a character study, but without interesting characters. Mickey Rourke does a good job, but Eric Roberts' goofy performance is too much. Kind of nice at times, but completely inconsequential.

there are spots where the music just ruins it, but all-in-all it's a pretty stand up movie. i didn't dig hannah, but rourke and roberts were awesome together.

Very good crime drama, with great acting from Rourke, Hannah, Burt Young and others, though Eric Roberts as Paulie kind of walks the line between powerfully eccentric and annoyingly overboard. The ending was a bit of a surprise, but I liked it.

Wow. Mickey Rourke as a young good-looking leading man. I had heard the rumors but didn't quite believe it until I saw it. But enough about Rourke. Holy crap, Eric Roberts is amazing in this film. You hate him for being such a scumbag and he ruins everything that Rourke tries to do but he is so convincingly pathetic that you almost feel bad for him. I had no idea that Roberts had this in him. His performance as Paulie easily surpasses everything that his sister has ever done. Good movie too.

Serioulsy fucking awful movie. Crazy shit just happening all the time, with no consequences, except for Paulie losing a thumb(?) Just bad bad story telling.
