The Pleasure Garden

Alfred Hitchcock's directorial debut (after an incomplete film and one that hasn't survived) is a fairly routine, but engaging melodrama. Hitchcock displays some real visual flair. Mander takes a villainous turn in the climax and one can't say he doesn't really go for broke.

I'm sorry to say I found this extremely boring.

Hitchcock's first picture is one of those melodramas that winds up being much farther off the deep end than the beginning would lead you to expect, which can be fun in a trashy sort of way. It's a bit inevitable to look around for some inkling of the later Hitchcock's style, like in a few of the more creative camera setups, or the way the film tries to set up and then break down some misleading first impressions of the two leading ladies.

Hitchcock opens up his career with modest horror. The plot of troubled relationships is made more harrowing by some terrifying jump cuts/ missing frames.

Those curious to complete Hitchcock's vast filmography will find none of genius in exhibited in his later work, despite perhaps the goading sexual overtones. These, too, get bogged down in morality.

The more old movies I watch the more I see this plot repeated. Romance starts, someone turns out to be unfaithful, hearts are broken, then something better comes along. Would it were true.
