The breathtakingly beautiful and long-awaited second feature from the Brothers Quay. On the eve of her wedding, the beautiful opera singer Malvina is mysteriously killed and abducted by a malevolent Dr. Droz. Felisberto, an innocent piano tuner, is summoned to Droz's secluded villa to service his strange musical automatons. Little by little Felisberto learns of the doctor's plans to stage a "diabolical opera" and of Malvina's fate. He secretly conspires to rescue her, only to become trapped himself in the web of Droz's perverse universe. (Zeitgeist Films)

A film which totters back and forth on the line between credible, almost-engaging but underfunded mystery, and pretentious, vacuous Euro-arthouse trash. Clearly created by a partnership who have a strong faith in their own auteurship abilities, and never listened to anybody who told them they weren't that good. The principal problems are the lack of plot, constant flow of empty dialogue and monologue, and circular character arcs. The Quays' good work must be at the opposite end of the spectrum.

I'm sure i'd appreciate Institute Benjamenta a lot more if i rewatched it now, this was not great by any stretch but it was completely fine for what it is. The worst that can be said about it is that it's kind of like Tim Burton trying to direct a Guy Maddin film (strong overtones of Twilight of the Ice Nymphs in particular), or maybe a lesser Raoul Ruiz film, without much of the humor.

The Quay Brothers attempt to showcase their savant-like stop motion abilities in a full thirty seconds combined of stop motion animation. On top of that, in the sparse sections where you get to see it, there's hardly any motion in the "stop-motion". What's left is a poorly written and mishandled script. What a shame.

Didn't really understand what was going on, while watching it for the first time. But the beauty of the film keeps you interested in it.

Disappointing implementation of a good premise.
