At its best, the original stage musical is an opulent, bombastic guilty pleasure, but this weak adaptation isn't even that. Emmy Rossum is serviceable as Christine, but Gerard Butler doesn't have the gravitas or the pipes required for the Phantom, and his supposedly horrific "disfigurement" amounts to a bad case of acne. This is a story that cries out for mystery and atmosphere by the truckload, but Schumacher instead delivers confusion and gaudiness. A letdown, even for casual Phans.

Are you kidding me? It's Gerard Butler with bit of a burn on his face. He could get anyone he wanted in that Opera house. Anyone. I felt like I was watching myself sing in the car.

The Phantom of the Opera is an overlong, underdeveloped, melodramatic romance that contains numerous songs that you've likely heard before. And if you haven't, then this isn't the project to warm you to the story. It's a fairly straightforward adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical, but that might not have been the best route to take. Its Phantom is poorly cast, its characters and romance are shallow, and its main strengths come from its production and costume design.

In terms of a screen adaptation this had some real potential. However, in order to convince us that the phantom can seduce someone with the power of song how about making sure he can actually sing??? You don't want average, above average or even good: you want brilliant singing! And this sub-par phantom was inside my mind for all the wrong reasons.

The score is absolutely enthralling - haunting, bombastic, and exquisite in turns - and the vocal performances are without a weak link. Moving from number to number, however, it is up to the viewer to fill in the gaps of story and development, and that's just not my cup of tea. The face reveal and inconsistent makeup design leaves a lot to be desired, as well, but the whole experience is certainly more than saved by the music.

The music of the night has hit something of a sour note: Critics are calling the screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's popular musical histrionic, boring, and lacking in both romance and danger. Still, some have praised the film for its sheer spectacle.

Schumacher's version certainly looks the part, with sumptuous sets packed with colour and gothic detail, amazing costumes aplenty, and swirling cameras following the action up, down, back and around along paths only a madman could imagine. The narrative itself is not very impactful though... most of the players can sing better than they can act. Rossum is so innocent, Wilson so foppish, and Butler so unscary that it feels like the sequel to Disney's Beauty and the Beast. This movie has no teeth.

Putting Joel Schumacher in charge is a sure fire way to ruin a movie's potential. Some of the characters are casted well. But the title character himself, the Phantom, played by Gerard Butler, is awful. His singing just isn't good enough. And even beyond him, this adaptation feels so long. The visuals are quite nice, but that novelty dies fast. Still, there are a few songs in there that are done well.

Oh wow. I'm a huge fan of the musical, and this is just wrong. The cast is all wrong, especially when it comes to Gerard Butler who CANNOT sing the role...at all. He struggles so much. It's all style over substance. The movie looks good, and that might have helped the film if it wasn't so long.

Schumacher's direction and staging is so lavish as to be over-the-top, but the absurd decadence of it all is one of the film's better qualities. Its best quality is Rossum, a true talent with a beautiful voice and the looks to match. While the movie delivers an adequate visual experience, it's emotionally flat, so ultimately I can't really recommend it. I just couldn't connect with it. Still, as a chance to ogle Ms. Rossum, it's certainly watchable. There are a couple of great songs, too.

Overblown adaptation of an overblown musical. The physical production is quite impressive, but Schumacher (much like ALW) takes himself far too seriously and the film suffers because of it. Only Driver and Richardson manage to acquit themselves in the acting department. Gerard Butler is horrid.

The adaptation was much better than I'd expected! Seldom have I found a movie that was a stage show/musical that worked well on screen, and actually this managed to do so! The production quality was really great, and the feel of the movie fitting to that of the stage production. In some respects, I could understand the various plots better in the movie - something I wasn't expecting. Still, liberties were taken in the story adaptation, but overall I was pretty pleased with it.

This is, like, exactly what musicals shouldn't be: self-important and no fun at all. I don't know much about the technical side of singing, but the guy who played the Phantom seemed utterly subpar. The girl who played Christine was good, though. Some of the songs were pretty good, but others were annoying to no end. It's a pretty-looking film, though; I'll give them that.

Emmy Rossum's performance & presence are very impressive for a 17 year old; most Hollywood actors keep playing high school kids until age 24. Beyond that this kind of thing just isn't for me, what with the endless operatic melodramatic singing, singing, singing, singing. I don't go see stage musicals for a reason: I don't give a shit about them. Lol when Gerard Butler's HIDEOUS DEFORMITY is revealed and THE WHOLE THEATRE SCREAMS IN HORROR, and it's like some red discoloration on one cheek.

This was the first 'real' theater experience I had and I fell madly in love with it. But as you age, you start to realize just what huge dicks both Raoul and Eric are, and as the movie itself and the music weren't that good anyway, this one left me mostly cold. All points are for Ellison making me realize how VERY much I want a rewrite with a Christine/Meg ending.

I like the music and spectacle of the movie, but quite frankly the story didn't really work out for me. I've never seen the screen production so I can't really compare the two, but I never really got why Christine didn't just run off with Raoul. Add into the picture a Phantom who wasn't all that disfigured, the jumps to the future during the movie that were pretty pointless, and a rather anti-climactic ending and it just made for a decent, but disappointing movie.

Exceedingly good translation. I think Les Miserables is better on stage but this is better translated and SUNG. Don't forget PofO on stage isn't exactly high art. Criticizing adaption of Weber for not having music, vocals or gravitas of classic operas seems perhaps a little... umm.. naive? Having never seen the musical but knowing full well of it's popularity, this adaptation must be pretty damn poor if it felt so mediocre to me. The Music of the Night was the only song that really resonated with me. Plot-wise, the flash-forward framing device seemed pointless, and the Phantom's turn of face at the climax was abrupt and unconvincing. I didn't mind the acting, and Rossum is gorgeous and talented.

The Phantom of the Opera (2004) really suffers from many of the same problems that most movie musicals suffer. First, the sound isn't mixed that well, so you don't get the full power of some of the truly amazing songs that are included. Second, there are many exchanges which are sung without any real melody or purpose. It would have been less tedious to just have the actors speak these parts. Another big complaint I have is that The Phantom is just too handsome.
