Treat Williams is either so good at playing a pulp villain or is so colossally tone deaf acting there is no middle ground here. Billy Zane looks like a total idiot running around in a purple bodysuit , a real hoot. It was so easy coming up with super heroes in the 30s “yeah he’s a guy who can shoot two guns at once and lives in a sex cave with his dad’s ghost and a whole lotta boy butlers”

One of the better adaptations of a comic-book hero, encompassing a real Republic Serials flavor with exotic locations and great period atmosphere. Billy Zane plays it flat-out straight, and despite a dogged adherence to certain movie conventions, this one is mostly a winner.

I love how pleasantly in awe Treat William's villain is of everything in the movie. The actors don't have much to work with here. Silly, but some pretty cool visual design.

I frequently get this one confused with The Shadow. The difference is that the Shadow has an amazing cast and The Phantom...does not.

Very cheesy comic book movie which is actually not bad. The cinematography and locations are easily the best part of the movie. It just doesn't take itself serious enough to make you have any vested interest of what's going on and make it long term memorable.

What a pant load this is. The costumes and effects look like a fairly high production Saturday Night Live skit, and the writing is worse.

The producers sure didn't you learn from other failures around this time. In the early 1990's, Dick Tracy was a disappointment, and The Shadow was a bomb. These movies failed the same time they would have been planning The Phantom. What were they thinking? "Let's grab all the B-list actors we can. dump a bunch of money into yet another half-baked Superhero script, and see what happens!" Really, Billy Zane? And Treat Williams?? As a bad guy?!? And the ad slogan, "Slam Evil!" What a waste.

Top badass moment? Billy Zane cross-dressing as Seven of Nine; kinky. “The Phantom” (or to give it its full title “Indiana Jones and the Phantom of Bengalla”) is a decent looking film with a great scene-chewing bad guy. Sadly, The Phantom always seems so many steps ahead of the baddies that it generates zero tension for the viewer. It does however, give a text-book example of how to toss off a dull origin story in two minutes, so we can get on with things. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

This is pretty universally despised, and I'm convinced it's just because of the dumb costume. The effects do not hold up, and it could just be nostalgia for pre-Marvel superhero days, but I kind of miss when superhero movies weren't afraid to be goofy and show some personality, and this Zorro meets Indiana Jones meets 1930s serial super hero story is that. I don't know, maybe I was just in a good mood, but I had fun.

Superhero Phantom goes to war against anyone who is even remotely involved in criminal activity. Master villain Xander Drax wants to get his hands on three magical skulls at all costs. The three objects will give him a power no less than a thousand times greater than the greatest source of power on Earth.

Zane is a complete cheeseball, but he really isn't bad in this misguided wannabe Indiana Jones style throwback. The problem is not him, nor that it's camp, or decidedly old fashioned, even for its time, but that it is a largely witless action adventure that has no perspective on the character or any idea what to do with him. Wincer assembled a decent b-movie cast, and the locations and practical effects are okay. It's just so uneventful, and Zane's costume looks stupid.

It's not great but us a fun superhero adventure that certainly draws influence moe from films like Indiana Jones than other superheroes. The Phantom is a bit goofy as he predates even characters like Superman. And the villain loves being evil and hams it up in the best way.

Not sure how faithful this is to the comic strip but the first 20 minutes or so have all the pulp-style adventure, flat dialogue, predictability & 1-dimensional characters you'd associate with an old newspaper strip. You hope there's some humor to get you through it & luckily it shows up. The funniest parts subtly contrast Zane's gentlemanly manner against those around him. The action scenes also have some spectacular real-world stunt work & would have loved more scenes in NY. It has its moments

W1E1P0S0V0M1A0R0. Nigh unwatchable, but squeaks by solely on the merits of a surprisingly active surround soundtrack, even in Dolby Digital Plus. I can't imagine how this material was good even in the comic books.

I'm probably a bit prejudiced when it comes to evaluating The Phantom given my love of old '30s serials. I thought it was okay, though Billy Zane doesn't have the charisma to be a leading man (especially when you compare him to someone like Harrison Ford) and Catherine Zeta-Jones' character turns simply because the plot needs her to. I'm also not a fan of the purple costuming, which, and you know this is coming, makes the Phantom look like Grimace.

Political correctness prevents me from making a comment on Billy Zane's unitard. Regardless, this is Saturday afternoon comic book serial fun that in no way takes itself very seriously. In summation, good score and cinematography, bad script and incredibly awful superhero costume.

An extremely bland superhero adaptation. Its biggest problems are that the villains, except in one scene involving a spear, are woefully unthreatening even for a comic romp and that Billy Zane cannot muster a great deal behind the purple latex costume. Its not even that comically bad.

I found this to be a pretty corny and goofy movie. The actors involved are serious actors and they don't really pull off the tongue-in-cheek comedy for which this movie calls. It seems like it might've been better as a straight-forward superhero drama, but both the hero and villain are underdeveloped and have no connection with the audience whatsoever.

One of the few superhero movies that could use a remake. I'm a big Billy Zane fan, but it's understandable that this movie probably ruined his career. God awful effects, terrible acting (especially by Treat Williams, who's normally bad, but God Damn), and a really bad story. The only redeeming quality is that you can watch it for a few laughs, but even then it's kinda boring/lame.

This movie could have been better for a lot of reasons. It's a pretty decent B-movie otherwise, but I think that it's main downfall was its faithfulness to the source material. Basically, the Phantom costume does not translate well from the comic-books. It looks extremely stupid.
