The People vs. George Lucas
2010
Comedy, Documentary
1h 33m
Uses a courtroom debate approach to explore the issues of filmmaking and fanaticism around one of the industry's most famous franchises and its creator. The innovative film combines filmmaker and celebrity interviews with fan films - submitted via the film's site - to make this the world's first digitally democratic feature documentary. (imdb)

If you want to see why George Lucas is a bad film maker, seek out Red Letter Media's Star Wars reviews. To find the silliest Star Wars fans in the galaxy look no further. The story amounts to petty complaints and nerdsploitation, with the not appearing Lucas depicted as the hero, when the fans finally kiss and make up. To me Phillippe misses the obvious discussion of the objective fact that the Star Wars prequels are just not well told stories - fans nostalgic relationships be damned.

I was hoping for at least one well-constructed attack on the prequels, but Red Letter Media still has the best one. The rants were repetitive and they didn't critique the films overall (just specific scenes and marketing). However, there were some very good quips I will share with the one friend I have that liked the prequels and "fridge incident". The discussion of the cultural impact of "Star Wars" was also insightful.

It's a big circle jerk about Star Wars fans made by Star Wars fans. But I mean, it's Star Wars, and I'm a fan, so...just show me where to stand.

Highly entertaining documentary which excels at funny talking heads and an absolutely outstanding objectivity. Very rarely do you watch a documentary and feel like the full story is told completely with both sides given an equal weight. The People vs. George Lucas is is born out of a love for Star Wars, for the arts and for pop culture.

It got some nice story to tell. Mr. Plinkett did it way better.

A film that largely consists of entitled mega-dorks who are convinced that Lucas has wrought personal insult and harm to each of them. Fortunately, also included are a number of more reasonable perspectives, people who understand the complexities and nuance of an individual's creative control versus a culture's adopted ownership. This film should be commended for its even-handedness.

I think this is (unintentionally) an incredibly sympathetic portrait of Lucas. He has some of the absolute worst fans in the world. These are people who alternate between spitting in his face and worshiping at his feet, yet at the end of the day their walls are covered with action figures. A portrait of a tortured artist being constantly hounded by awful, self-entitled dorks.

I've got conflicting feeling about the subject. As a rational human being I understand that George does and should have the right to do what he wants with his universe, and the film definitely presents this side of the argument very well even if for much less time than the other side. But I'm also very much a fan, I wouldn't call myself a fanboy anymore even though I definitely used to be. As such, I feel a lot of complaints about the special editions and prequels are valid. I liked it.

Star Wars fans are the most annoying, ignorant, arrogant, melodramatic, self-entitled little fucks. 90 minutes of whiny little bitches complaining that they don't like kids movies when they're 40 like they did when they were 10. Who would have thought? The whole movie is completely repetitive. You could watch any 5 minutes of this, and understand the entire movie.

There's a moment where they perfectly capture the first day I saw Phantom Menace in the theaters. There really is a shared culture of that moment when you saw "A Long Time Ago," followed by "STAR WARS" and you felt like you were being sucked off by an angel. Then that anticipate scroll text rolls along with nonsensical jabbering and we all feel like that angel just stopped sucking and denied you release. This documentary captures what it's been like since. Highly Recommended.

It is not such a strong documentary, especially the beginning feels rather rushed and if you are a little interested in the whole story you will not hear a lot of new facts as most of them were already discussed to death (Who shot first?, Midichlorians, etc.). But I still give it points for showing a fair image of both sides and for capturing the enthusiasm that the people feel for the films, especially the shots before the release of Episode I were fascinating.

I came for the subject, I stayed for the frantic, light pace and satisfying touches on every divisive Star Wars aspect. The Originals are my favorite films ever and while I also love the Prequels, they can't hold a candle to the first (last?) three. I have the same conflict many fans feel and I do sympathize with Lucas as a Darth Vader figure. He deserves the utmost respect for his contributions to the world, but God... Han shot first. He fucking shot first. Give me that movie and I'll shut up.

While well done and ultimately pleasing, I think this doc does only skirts around Star Wars fandom in general rather than tackle its supposed subjects. Still, fans of the films such as myself should enjoy this fine.

Very entertaining doc which is surprisingly poignant in showing the love-hate relationship between Lucas and his fans. Funny, even-handed and never condescending of its subjects.

Surprisingly well-rounded and enjoyable debate on a widespread phenomenon. It mostly comes down to -- George Lucas sucks, but he used to be creative, but now he sucks, but we still love him cause I liked space 'splosions as a kid, but now he sucks. So yeah, not too heavy on 'debate'. Mostly interesting as a view into certain adults with much too firm a grasp on their childhood. Did that sound condescending? Hope so.

If you have little vested interest or outrage this is a fine film to introduce you to the situation being played out in forums across the globe. The use of the immense amount of fan created media was a good frame to rest the talking heads argument against (http://youtu.be/qJlbPXZEpRE). I guess TPvGL really looks at how someone's reaction to art can be expressed in the 21st centruy. A lot of us are really horribly vague and unarticulated by the way.

This film's existence is predicated on there being enough geeks willing 2 watch even more obsessive geeks provide 90 minutes worth of extreme tempest-in-a teacup ranting. This means ur level of enjoyment depends on how big a SW geek u really r, so plan accordingly. It's, uh, "achievement" is making a reasonable case against Lucas' artistic independence, but never comments on the fact that all this complaining serves a bigger purpose: it lets diehards keep talking about their favorite subject.

Entertaining if you are even a casual SW fan. It isn't going to win any awards but it has enough logic and humor to keep one watching.

Nice job getting Kurtz on camera...the rest was just an overview of the various debates without bringing much to the table.
