Nice-looking film that does more to sell me on the setting then the story. It takes it a good 100m to *plod* through what Maupassant got done in 6 pages, though at least it tosses in a different twist to sort things at the end, for better or worse. Ah, but the bourgeois bustle and prosperity of 20s Shanghai comes off looking glamorous! And those fancy inter-titles (even a moment of stop motion for effect)! Also, the (all-too-few) moments it tries to be a crime film (ah, that dark burglary)!

Okay Chinese silent, but the length tested my patience. While a downfall, it was not the type of tragedy that warranted over 100 minutes of visual drama.

I enjoyed the movie up to the overly happy ending which cheapened the whole story and the whole vanity subtext was stupid and didn't fit in well.
