The Passion of The Christ focusses on the last twelve hours of Jesus of Nazareth's life. The film begins in the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus has gone to pray after sitting the Last Supper. Intense movie that deals with its subject matter honestly, brutally, and maturely. Mel Gibson is a master at creating a visual masterpiece and this is no exception to that. The Passion of the Christ is an excellent movie on every front and is the kind of movie that will surely be remembered many years to come.

I fully expected this to be exploitation, and antisemitic, and really awful, but wow, I never expected it to be THIS bad. Its one amusing feature (took me a while to recognize) is that the gibberish they're speaking contains some atrociously mispronounced and ungrammatical Hebrew, plus trace amounts of Arabic. Anyway the sad thing is that Gibson really is just a symptom. This movie reflects something larger about Christianity, its view of the world and what "passion" means in that religion.

Shows the brutality of Jesus' death, and that's something a lot of Christians don't really realize or think about when they think of the cross. His death isn't as important as his resurrection, and this movie only slightly hints at that at the end. Oops- spoiler.

I wish more of Christ's life could have been included in this film, but it still stands up. Caviezel does a fine job and the imagery is so well done that it's difficult - if not painful - to watch at times.

Even if you're not a religious person the story of Christ here in Mel Gibson's view is harrowing and brutal. It's tough to watch, but very very well done. Mel Gibson does put a bit of a twist on some aspects of the story, but it's just his speculation of events not described within the context of the bible.

Like or hate Gibson, but rarely has any director in history felt so passionate about his movie - and it shows. In e v e r y single frame, piece of sound and acting performance. The result? As a linguist, it was fascinating to hear Aramaic on screen, and as a former Christian, the graphic violence was a fresh take on a story I've known since childhood. But as a generally decent person, I was disgusted by the level of racism and anti-semitism present and as a cinephile I was turned off by the misguided artistic choices throughout. Gibson took some risks making this, and while some paid off, most did not, leading to a cheesy, manipulative, self-indulgent offensive wreck of a film.

You all realize of course that THIS is the movie that started the boom of the torture-porn subgenre, not _Saw_ (although of course nobody, especially the godsquadders, wants to admit it). So noncommercial, ambitious, and just plain different (a 21st century movie shot in Aramaic?!) that it's consistently interesting, but there's so little here of real interest about the story of Jesus. He gets betrayed, He gets arrested, He gets tortured, He gets killed. And the portrayal of Satan is silly

While making a slasher flick based on his interpretation/re-invention of a pivotal biblical story, he manages to take jabs at the entire Jewish religion, even using common modern-day bigot stereotypes. It hardly seems accidental. Yay for free speech, but boo for using it to stir up religious tensions. Best that religious folks just quietly follow their beliefs without hurting anyone, I think. No need to inundate secular society with needless faith/persecution ordeals.

"the greatest story ever told" meets "300". Hard to rate a movie that depends so much on ones beliefs (I wondered how many reviews I would read before I saw "Remember that Jesus went through all this for us !") but this retelling adds ZERO to the story, other than increasing the gore to 11, presumably in order to say "Look at his REAL level of suffering!". Well made, good central performance, but nothing more than a torture porn movie that thinks it has a good reason to exist. It doesn't.

So this is the movie that forever branded Caviezel as "that jesus guy", I'm surprised, he didn't actually do a bad job. Gibson seemed to go through a lot of effort to make this movie realistic featuring Latin and Aramaic, although no one would notice. I'm still a guy who shies away from religious stuff, so to the agnostics and atheists of the world this fails to be anything other than a guy speaking Aramaic while being beat up for two and a half hours.

I'm not sure how to feel about this. I thought it was pretty powerful at pouring emotion into a portrayal of the last hours of Jesus' life, but at the same time you know some of the emotion Mel Gibson was pouring into this was how much Jews are evil, which is to bad considering Jesus' teachings. Ultimately I don't see it as really being something that helps people outside the Christian faith understand it. Interesting to say the least.

Very mixed feelings about this so I'm not entirely sure this is the score I'd actually give it. Some find it to be life altering while others think it's a messy, soulless bloodbath. I believe in God. I think this happened. That doesn't mean I need to watch it every year let alone a second or third time. It is an unforgettable, visceral experience, and I personally think it's a powerful story. But I don't know. I never feel the need to revisit it.

To quote South Park: Say what you want about Mel Gibson, but the son of a bitch knows story structure! A movie about Jesus that begins with a "based on a true story" sign, doesn't get a lot of initial goodwill from my side. That said the movie is an extremely well executed and beautifully shot Jezploitation flick, even though it's a bit difficult to take it serious when the blood splatters all around and the poor jesus fall YET AGAIN, head first and in slowmotion, walking up Golgotha .

What was this movie about? Jesus, or blood, blood & even more blood? Probably Gibson put as much violence & gore as possible into it to 'aid' christians in remembering this movie as 'very confronting'. The amount of violence, blood, guts & gore made the movie very shocking, and those things will unfortunately be better rememberend than the story of jesus itself.

I can safely say this is one film that will never have even a relatively objective analysis. As a Christian, I think Mel crafted a heretical film: this is the heresy of Apollinarism married to snuff pornography. This is all visceral and scopophilic, punctuated with POV shots to induce empathy. Jesus was tortured so we wouldn't have to be - but this film makes us feel it anyway. Think what you will, but I think it's unsound.

Like Dreyer’s Passion, Gibson’s is less a narrative than a ritual to be endured by the audience. While not a fan of the film, the vehemence of the objections and criticisms given by others often seems, in the eyes of this viewer, to be a little suspicious. There’s something to be said for Gibson’s audacity, ignoring the studios, filming entirely in a dead language, and financing it with his own money.

The ending adds an unnecessarily triumphant air to an otherwise artful and sufficiently moving film. Personally, I did not need to see an image of Jews crying over their broken temple. Gibson might as well have flashed the final scoreboard: Jesus 1, Jews 0. The final shot of the resurrection came off as a bit corny, and again, like a bit of an endzone dance. Scorsese's Last Temptation illustrated what would have been a more graceful ending moment, for me. Still, the buildup was amazing.

Kudos to Gibson for showing the depths of human cruelty and what a crucifixion would have, in all likelihood, consisted of.
