Garbo being Garbo. And she really was on top of her game at the start of The Painted Veil being playful with the overly stiff Herbert Marshall. Then the fresh new world of China and she falls for George Brent when Marshall neglects her because of his duties. Sadness and frustration follows and the movie turns a bit too melodramatic, but what happens around them kind of helps mellow it out with a greater crises going on and it really becomes beautiful toward the end....
