One of the finest and most underrated westerns ever made......a mystical and violent trip through the American west, featuring a Confederate outlaw (Eastwood), a beautiful woman (Locke), and an elder Indian (George). At times slow burning, other times action packed, this is one of the best of the 70s.

Clint Eastwood spits on: a beetle, a dog (repeatedly), two dead hillbillies, a scorpion and a traveling salesman. Kills about a hundred people, too.

After mastering the part of the western protagonist, Eastwood makes his directoral skills clear. Josey Wales is another interesting western character with clear elements of the emotional and moral dilemmas of the west Eastwood seems to enjoy representing. With the inclusion of an excellent cast, lead primarily by the excellent Chief Dan George, and an interesting plotline it makes for a classic western. Add to that some surreal, humourous interludes involving spitting and an adorable mangy mutt.

Clint's best western, Leone classics notwithstanding. Filled with action, this movie also has something the spaghetti westerns usually lack: a heart. Eastwood's relationship with Lone Watie and his respect for the Indians in general was revolutionary at the time.

Unlike almost all other post-1960 westerns, this one has more than just tough guy one-liners and badass gunslinging. Don't get it wrong, there's plenty of that, but there's also a layer of emotion uncommon to westerns of the time. It just kept growing on me throughout the entire two hour running time, and by the end I felt entertained and appreciative.

An excellent western from Eastwood. It builds itself on the most classic of western cliches, and it does a fine job of it. Eastwood does well in actually portraying a sympathetic, intelligent, and developed Indian character, with whom he develops a close friendship, and he does a solid job of fleshing out his own character as well, balancing morality with typical Clint badassery. "You gonna pull those pistols or whistle 'Dixie'?"

I'm sure this is a good film, but I never seem to be in the right mood to appreciate it as such. As opposed to my favourite westerns, this wasn't the fun, visceral and memorable audiovisual experience I was hoping for, and the animal abuse in the film was a bit too much.

A little disappointed. The character feels shallow, even though the movie itself tries to make him look the opposite. The spitting was epic though.

Another superb western from Eastwood. It manages to turn the stereotype of Union soldiers being morally fantastic liberators and provides the grim reality that atrocities were committed by both sides during the American civil war. Eastwood is fantastic as Josey Wales, the once politically apathetic frontiersman driven to join the Confederates after Union soldiers butcher his family. As a side note the author of the novel this is based was a member of the KKK. Oh my.

Great characters brought to life by memorable performances, great dialogue, great scenarios, and great little character moments. It's a movie more about individual scenes and instances than the overarching plot (although the plot itself is a wholly satisfying cat-and-mouse game) but it wastes no time moving from one riveting moment to the next. Relentlessly entertaining, no complaints at all (except for one dumb gag about a guy falling in a pile of horseshit).

A very strong western that fits well with the rest of Eastwood's catalogue. If you like most of his westerns, you'll like this one. Eastwood is at his Eastwoodyist and the film is well paced, with action popping up just when you're starting to get comfortable. Wales is an interesting character, deeper than some of Eastwood's others. It's not perfect; the main issue with it is that it can be a bit aimless as far as Eastwood's actual goals go and it lacks some urgency. Still, very very good.

I think in many ways it's the best western Eastwood directed, particularly because it owes so little to his spaghetti western origins and carves it's own path. It's a beautiful looking film with magnificent landscapes shot by Bruce Surtees.

This has to be the best movie Eastwood directed in the 70s. It is thoughtful, sly, and strong, with a good tonal balance in a movie that hits many opposite notes. But deep down, it doesn't transcend the western genre. It is merely a standout example.

I liked this Western in terms of it showing the titular character getting on with the natives and that not all the characters were young and attractive, as I imagine must have been the case back in the days of 'wild west'. There are some good pieces of dialogue, some thoughtful. There is of course strong violence (some quite bloody) and some strong language. I thought this was a good film and so I'd recommend it.

Clint has made a career of playing inscrutable characters, but T.O.J.W is probably the first real example of his directorial skill. It begins as a standard revenge story, but it takes many narrative detours and develops unexpectedly into a depthful quasi-Fordian take on a makeshift community of outcasts who band together to protect their own. Suttee's shadowy photography is stunning, capturing the jagged contours of the American landscape and the rustic interiors of period dwellings.

The residue of war is refractory and widespread in Clint Eastwood's brooding, grandiose revisionist western. What's impressive is just how wide a compass of feeling he brings without compromising his fabled efficiency of gesture, or reaching beyond his uber-masculine monotone grumble. There's delight to be found in the accumulating gallery of characters, the saucy humor and the bushwhacking, bounty hunting and stand-offs against the expanse of frontier landscape.

A classic action western where Eastwood essentially play the same iconic character as we meet in the dollars-trilogy. A guy you don't want to mess with, he doesn't say much and can easily wipe out ten guys at a time. Alongside him rides Watie, very different to Wales but they are a nice pairing. A warm, witty and humane character thats easy to appreciate. There are scenes that are very enjoyable and a few good one-liners but the movie doesn't manage to truly captivate me throughout.

eastwood's old-fashioned idealism always bordered on being didactic and hokey, but he's a director of great sensitivity and mythic resonance, capable of drilling deep wells of pathos out of what couldn't possibly work on the page, as evidenced by the entire second half of this. Eastwood is beating around that bush of what makes Westerns their own special entity: you would assume Josey's morals base or regressive, until you think about the stands he takes - and the stands he lets go. It's as spiritual as El Topo, just as relevant, but not nearly as self-indulgent. A gem that is bizarre for its iconoclasm... and its popularity.

A crisp, well-paced effort from Eastwood. The film slowly builds its emotional core, ironically through a series of violent confrontations that lead to the rescues of what becomes a strange and motley grouping of people. This assortment of rejects and wanderers form a community borne out of a necessity for human contact and interaction, with the sacrificing Wales at its center. The cinematography is gorgeous and the dialogue crackles throughout. Very entertaining.

A great, classic Western starring and directed by Clint Eastwood. I see this as kind of a prototype for Unforgiven - Clint is horribly wronged in the beginning, and then the movie consists of his squinty-eyed quest for revenge. Nobody can play this character like Eastwood can, and he's helped by the supporting Indian chief character, who brings another cool dimension to the film. The final showdown scene with the villain is one of the best of all time.
