Bourgeois guilt as a form of political awakening for a mid-age woman who finds her adopted daughter is a missing baby of a missing, actually assassined, couple of leftists. Strong acting does all the stuff here, but Puenzo manages to combine a dramatic family story with the trauma of a nation in their most violent period.

A couple of music cues aside, this is very well put together, letting the emotions rise out of the material and the very powerful performances. It does the little things right, the conversations, the little allusions, and the depiction of internal and social conflicts in a way that highlights issues while placing them in a broader context. The only thing that bothers me is the most fundamental decision, the perspective of guilty privilege that pushes the very real victims to a secondary role .

Deliberate and detailed depiction of Aleandro's history teacher gradually realising how little she knows of the reality of her own country's history is a little too bloodless and austere at times, lurching into sudden, violent moments of emotional conflict which feel a little out of place (the denouement is the definition of "that escalated quickly!") Held together by a cast of fine, understated performers with Aleandro superb in the lead - interesting in many ways and likely worth a rewatch.

A thoughtful piece of filmmaking that brings the audience of people oblivious to the Argentine military junta into a bracing knowledge of its abuses through the character of Alicia. The subject matter here is important, and her position as history teacher (and memory-maker) creates a productive tension as she learns more about what went on in the previous few years. Once Alicia's direction becomes clear, the film offers a rather unsurprising look at her transformation.

Ülkemizdekileri çözdük de Arjantin'i kaldı.
