For a while there, Eddie Murphy was simply amazing. Then he began a plunge into unfunny. Then he crawled out of his hole with this movie, which was a very good return to form. Although not as good as Coming to America, this is still really good. But alas, this was Eddie's last hurrah.

There's a sweet film underneath the crassness and fart jokes. I felt exhausted by Murphy's manic energy as Buddy Love. I tried explaining how this film wasn't fatphobic to my partner just as the scene where he becomes super fat and becomes Godzilla happens.

Murphy's big comeback after a string of flops has lost some of its shine, and its message of self acceptance is hard to swallow, but the mix of gross out humour and sentiment is more effective than any of its imitators (i.e. the Madea films), or Murphy's subsequent iterations (e.g. Nutty Professor 2 and Norbit) and Murphy plays multiple characters with amusing results, especially as the Klumps. The dinner scenes are uproarious, and Baker's makeup work is excellent.

This is probably as nice-guy as Eddie Murphy can get. All at the same time this is as crazed and over the top wild he can be. This modern comedy styled update on Jekyll and Hyde is a fantastically funny and surprisingly heartfelt ride. Even if it delves a little too far into the immature humor occasionally.

Eddie Murphy's talent for playing multiple characters is well on display in this remake of the Jerry Lewis classic. Not at the level seen in "Coming to America"(1988), but compared to what it became in something like "Norbit"(2007) this movie is certainly an Eddie Murphy classic.

The plot and also the (bad) jokes depend on every stereotype imaginable. Also of note, the entire premise of this movie depends on you buying in to the idea that when Eddie Murphy takes off the fat suit he becomes very sexy . . .

The Nutty Professor, a canny and exuberant update of the 1963 Jerry Lewis comedy, Murphy appears as seven different characters, but mostly he plays Sherman Klump, a hugely fat chemistry professor who longs to escape his load of misery. The makeup artist Rick Baker has given Murphy pouchy cheeks, a drooping double chin, and the body of a hippopotamus. Though I'm not quite sure how he brought it off, the effect is so convincing that Murphy effectively disappears inside that mountain of fake fles

The Nutty Professor hasn't aged well at all and looking back it's quite an uncomfortable watch. Upon its release I somehow enjoyed this film. Not just the once but several times. But this really is a moronic film of the 90's. There's no doubting that Eddie Murphy's multiple performances here are somewhat impressive and there are glimmers of laughs. But the one too many fart jokes are uncomfortably unfunny to watch back. This is better than the sequel and spin off of sorts Norbit though.
