"My favorite color is pink. Pink is red and white. Red 27. White 65. 65+27=92. Pink is four letters. 92 divided by 4 is twenty-fucking-three." At this point I could no longer contain myself and had what a friend kindly called a giggle fit for the rest of the film. But by the depth and intensity, I could hardly call it a giggle. More of a guffaw. After the film I was looking for the number 23 only to discover it wasn't everywhere. Just in as many places as most other numbers.

It follows the bad movie formula very closely. Step1: take an over the top script that would rarely work; step2: put it in the hands of one of the shittiest directors working in Hollywood; step3: hire one-dimensional comedy star for dramatic role; step4: collect the profit. I wanted to give this movie rating of 23/100, but it's not even worth that.

Oh. My. God! 3 minus 2 is 1, right? 1 plus 23 is 24, right? 24, divided by 3 is 8! Now 2 plus 3 is 5 multiplied by 8 is 40 which is exactly what I've chosen to rate this film! Also! 2 plus 3 plus 2 plus 3 equals 10, which is the part of the score that can be attributed to Carrey's acting! IT ALL FITS! DON'T. YOU. SEE. ?!!

A good performance by Jim Carrey and some good scenes do not make a good movie. Most of the rest of this experience is unfortunately too serious and too long to be enjoyed on a camp level but too poorly made to be enjoyed as a serious movie.

Towards the beginning, the film seems to be a promising postmodernist script reminscent of the novel House of Leaves. This alone made it compelling despite the flaws of the performances (Carrey cannot do serious roles at all). Yet by the end it was obvious that this was yet another by-the-numbers mind-of-a-killer psychological thriller with the absurd twist of family-fun mystery-solving in the middle. Utterly disappointing.

Schumacher/Carrey have an interesting idea that's not well-explored in their ridiculous screenplay. I'm confused why they would take on a project like this anyway, because you'd have to try very hard to make scares out of a number, but they settle for "23! It's everywhere!! It's in the color Pink! Ahh!" While I'm making it sound like an abomination, it's not the worst thing to hit screens this year to be sure, it just needs some rewrites, and a better director... say, David Fincher?

Visually a great movie. The writing came up short though. The characters and their obsession with the 23 wears thin after a little while and becomes annoying. Not to mention one of the characters was unidentified and seemed to pose as a filler for the movie. So-so writing, but it looked great.

It's poor in just about every way. A miscast Jim Carrey trudges his way through this thriller that is itself devoid of any tension. The script and premise is simple and nothing is done to make it much more interesting, and Joel Schumacher does nothing interesting in terms of camerawork or voice. I give this movie a few points in that there is effort put in here, but it fails at almost all levels.

People usually rate this movie pretty low because Jim Carrey, who is famous for his goofy roles, here is playing a very dark and shady character. This, in fact, makes people question whether Jim is serious or whether the whole story is a joke. This is supposed to be a psychological thriller with turns and twists so if you do not take him seriously you will definitely not enjoy it. I thought this movie was decent.

Just laughably bad. They constantly bend over backwards in this movie to make it look like a ton of numbers add up to 23 (or often 32, which is 23 backwards... Because THAT makes mathematical sense) like it's a real conspiracy. It's not entirely unredeemable though. The plot was decent, and its only downfall is that it does revolve around this outrageously stupid conspiracy theory. If it had been a fictional conspiracy, it would have been fine.

The Number 23 certainly isn't a great film, but it works in keeping your attention. Whether it's just so that you can find out what's going on the entire time or because seeing Jim Carrey in a role that isn't in a goofy comedy film is such a rare opportunity that you must relish it, you'll still likely be entertained. I've got to give it a slight recommendation, even if you'll be unlikely to want to watch it more than once.

A surprisingly interesting film, despite it's slightly neurotic premise. There's little to say about The Number 23 that isn't going to give key information away (much like it's hard to talk about Sixth Sense without spoiling it). I add this movie to my list of reasons why Jim Carey is so much better an actor than most people realize. Must like they forget Dead Poet's Society when they think of Robin Williams, people forget things like The Truman Show when Jim Carrey comes up. A pity.

Here is the premise of the film - given free use of the entire set of all mathematical tools, it is supposed to be alarming that the number 23 can be found through equations and processes using numbers gathered from every-day statistics and facts. Personally, I think they should make a sequel where somebody becomes obsessed with how, given the free use the entire set of keys on a keyboard, somebody could come up with a pathetic script and then somehow sell it to a major studio. Much scarier.

It's interesting that most people reviewing have a problem with numerology bit as that is just a consequence of something else, just an effect of the real problem. Its not a good film, utterly ludicrous, but its amazing that this film exists - a film, despite its silly concept is still able to present an interesting concept of how an idea, any no matter how absurd it is, can infect a person and distort them. That its laced in a sincere but ultimately bizarre premise has kept this in my mind a lot. I admit too I have a soft spot for Joel Schumacher that's difficult to defend, but his filmography is always fascinating for where it goes.

An intriguing premise and pretty good execution, for the most part. The main problem most people will have with the film, I believe, is that it relies heavily on the ending, which isn't as meaningful as it needs to be for the film to feel satisfying and complete. But, I can't discount that the rest of the film did have my interest.
