Shot simultaneously with Beauty and the Beast to reuse the same sets, TNH is another fantasy horror entry by Jerz that merges a kind of 'gritty realism' with fairy tale tropes, creating a heightened, borderline surreal, mood to reasonably unique effect. It is not without interest, and it has some fascinating imagery, but it fails to truly cohere like Beauty or Morgiana. Nonetheless, Herz was totally in his element here, and no other director navigated this slippery terrain quite like him.
