As a child I was dragged to library sales and as a young adulthood spent hours searching the shelves of used bookstores and pre-played disc retailers, I always get excited when collecting is the core interest of a film. When it's Skeletor, er, Frank Langella looking for means to contact the Devil, you have my full attention. There's reasons that I see this not playing for everybody but if it wasn't about collecting at all and simply featured the scene with the wheelchair, that would be enough.

The story is ultimately unfulfilling, but it has some of that good ol' Rosemary's Baby-charm to entertain Polanski fans. Kudos for trying to make a horror-movie about book-geeks, too bad some of it is so clunkily handled: 6-6-6 being the code to a collection of devilish texts. No, really?

It drags in a number of places and the story has too few hitches, everything runs way too smoothly to maintain the level of suspense Polanski was going for. On the plus side, the camerawork was great, the music was great and Johnny Depp was in it!

So many great things about this (except for the part where it goes "oh, and then this thing happened, the end!"), but I especially loved the subversion of gender role clichés. Depp may be the protagonist but he's never the hero, and every attempt he makes to become the hero results in his being saved by the powerful, competent, sexy, and just generally awesome Emmanuelle Seigner, a character whose toughness and sexiness never undermine each other. In other words, my ideal woman. Don't judge me.

When "The Ninth Gate" was coming out, Polanski visited the Danish Film School. In front of an audience he was asked: "Why does witchcraft play a part in so many of your movies?" Polanski interrupted: "Wait! Other than Rosemary's Baby, name me ONE of my other movies that is about whichcraft." The presenter couldn't. The rest of the time, Polanski was being cross like a child without candy. My guess is, he wasn't cross because of the lame interviewing, but because he knew his new movie SUCKED.

It must have sounded like a promotional piece of cake: the director of Rosemary's Baby returning to the diocese of devil worship. But no one could accuse Polanski of crass capitalization, much less crass capitalism. This is not an End of Days. It is an anti-End of Days, almost (if you will) a Return to the Good Old Days, holding special effects at bay -- insofar as is still humanly possible -- and following the flatfooted course of a classical detective story.

A poorly written crock of shit. Many eye-rolling moments scattered throughout, but the basic premise is handled with complete disregard for the intellectual intensity that is the pseudo-subject. I'm not satisfied that enough books were read in the making of this film.

I like the flirtation with the supernatural this film takes -- keeping itself grounded, yet still keeping any totally supernatural whackiness at bay (except the wire-fu, what was up with that?) Fun movie with an enjoyable plot at its centre that only gradually gets more loopy as the film comes to its conclusion, plus Langella's villain character is a badass -- totally insane, but still badass.

I don't know why I tortured myself by watching it until the end. I wish I could give it zero stars. It's so slow and boring, a lot of stuff is predictable and there is no suspense at all. The acting isn't very great, the characters comport themselves in such stupid ways. They tried to make it more interesting with 'unusual' camera work and noises, sometimes to put the viewer more in the situation of the protagonist - and they failed miserably. You should only watch this if you loathe yourself.

The character's evolution and motivation behind his decisions is nonexistent. The ending is extremely unsatisfying. The soundtrack tries desperately to create a resemblance of a thriller, but unsuccessfully. Very prolonged. Could have been a decent mystery, but instead it's mostly Johnny Depp moving from point A to point B. Furthermore, the little mystery the movie had, was grossly predictable. But I don't blame neither Depp, nor Polanski, it's all Arturo Pérez-Reverte's butcher writing.

In essence, this is Polanski doing for a trashy "devil" movie what Soderbergh did with OCEANS - we know (mostly) what all the beats are and we wait for Polanski's spin on them; drolly funny and beautifully performed by all (especially Depp and an incredible Langella), there are silk purses aplenty here, especially Polanski's distinctive framing and establishing choices (starting with the brilliant, silent opening scene). An underrated gem.

The Ninth Gate is the story of angels and demons as they live on earth. The movie takes a subdued look at those mythical creatures. The mystery of this movie is unraveled in an exciting and believable way. I was interested in the story throughout and the breadcrumbs left for the audience help bring them back to earlier points in the movie to question what is really happening. There is just enough belief and disbelief in this movie to keep in grounded in reality but make the viewer hope for more.

Johnny Depp (Dean Corso) tried, I mean he really did. There's only so much that an actor can do when a character is written so flatly. There was just very little characterization beyond the first 20 minutes of the film. The story was there - I thought Polanski's direction wasn't bad either - but the film just felt lifeless and a lot of that fell on the characters.

Extremely average and not remotely ambitious in any way. I'd consider it a comedy of sorts, and I don't even mean that snidely. A very simple plot, goofy characters, a shitty ending. Many film lovers have asked themselves "How should I feel about Polanski's films in light of his sex crimes and illegal flight from justice?" But Ninth Gate is so frivolous it feels beneath that question.

Well, I like suspense movies and I like Johnny Depp too. But I do not like it when I am done with the movie yet I have not figured out the suspense even after checking out the IMDB discussions. May be since I am non-Catholic it was difficult for me to understand a lot of things that would be obvious to others. Nonetheless I would say the movie was gripping throughout its length and you will find yourself asking - "What's going to happen next?" :) It is a one time watch, I say.

I couldn't for the life of me tell you what actually happens in this movie, though I did enjoy it, to an extent. The finale is just ridiculous, and it would be hard not to laugh at it. Even though the script is dreadfully boring (it's about book authentification, which is about as exciting as copy editing, even if it's the Devil's copy), Polanski manages to evoke a mood sorely lacking from Ron Howard's Dan Brown movies. It's ultimately a failure, but an interesting one, with great atmosphere.
