Drama, Suspense/Thriller

The murder of a prostitute in Nazi occupied Warsaw draws Wehrmacht Major Grau into an investigation where the evidence points to one of three high ranking Generals. The trail leads Grau from Warsaw to Paris and straight into the 1944 plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler, of which two of the Generals are deeply involved. Grau's case goes unfinished and it is not until 1965 when the true killer is brought to justice. (imdb)

The weird connection of stories makes it a bit odd. Great cast, just not used well.

Almost a complete waste of time. This is an asinine examination of minor events during WWII. In particular, the acting from Peter O'Toole is stiff, stupid and ridiculous. There is nothing much to take away from this story full to overflowing with meandering details and pointless subtext. Music is overly dramatic, boring and annoying. There were plenty of great actors all wasting their time in this shame of a movie that ultimately fails to deliver anything worthwhile or entertaining.

Sure it has O'Toole in it, but it isn't one of his better performances IMO and the plot isn't all that suspenseful. Didn't really get why it had to tie in with the assassination attempt on Hitler either.

Excellent war drama, with O'Toole outstanding in the lead, backed by delicious performances from Pleasence, Gray and Browne; young Courtenay also fine. Slightly muddled plotting in establishing scenes the only real detriment to an otherwise excellent screenplay, which has its fair share of some unexpectedly sharp and funny lines and situations, before becoming quite dark and intense in its later stages. Jarre's score also very good. Film certainly doesn't deserve its dismal reputation.

FIlm has potential but gets lost in murky script, lifeless performances. A dud.
