Two teachers, man-hungry Doris and restrained Marian, visit the Yorkshire moors a year after friend Evelyn disappeared there. On a stormy night, they take refuge in the isolated cottage of Stephen, one-time pianist shellshocked in the Spanish Civil War. Doris flees as soon as the flood subsides; but Marian's suspicions about Evelyn's fate, in conflict with her growing love for Stephen, prompt her to stay on among the misty bogs (imdb)

James Mason stars in a British drama with dark undertones. Perhaps not the scariest of horrors, but it dos have it's haunting effect slowly building up the theory of this mentally sick man. It's a little low-key, but serviceable to enjoy.

Decent British Gothic mystery. Although made 20 yrs. earlier, it reminded me of Vincent Price Poe-films, but it doesn't really cross into horror territory and has a distinct British feel. Scenes in the moors and in the hidden room were definitely atmospheric and must have been even more effective in the '42. Mason is menacing and the leading ladies were also enjoyably modern (for the time). It was also amusing to see how the attitude towards smoking has changed during the years.

Clunky, dated Gothic film made interesting by James Mason in the role of the shellshocked love interest.
