In 80's New York, everyone is horny as hell and this enrages humanoid Donald Duck to an unnatural degree.

Quite a nasty, sleazy little number this. Ticks all sorts of exploitation boxes, particularly those marked "nudity", "oddball characters" and "gore". It would be difficult to describe this as enjoyable, and it is reasonably baffling, but worth a look for the curious.

Watched this at my parents' house in the middle of the night, kept the volume turned way low because between the soundtrack and all the screaming and moaning going on, was afraid if they woke up and heard it they'd think I was watching some kinda weird 70s porno in their living room. This movie is so fucking skeevy and brutal, but rather boring and banal at the same time. I dozed off, was wakened by their cat puking on the rug (which feels somehow fitting for a Fulci film).

Just what you'd expect from a combination giallo/80s NY slasher: weird tone, stilted dialogue, goofy soundtrack, and holy shit, is it violent. The kills just keep getting nastier and nastier, culminating in the particularly brutal slicing and dicing of one unfortunate prostitute who hangs out with the wrong crowd. It's shockingly sleazy, and yet there's a grim sort of honesty in that...or something. I guess I just admire the balls on this movie, cuz damn. Video nasty, indeed.

While it starts off a little dry (almost "Fulci does a very special Law & Order episode") it unfolds beautifully/hideously into a sleazy, misanthropic nightmare where every character has their own sexual proclivities and no vagina is safe from a knife!

Just your typical killer loose in NYC. Just kidding. It's Fulci. Crotch shot, blood, razor blades, crotch shot, blood, eye stuff, the end. Crazy stuff.

From Fulci, viewing this twice now, The New York Ripper feels *below* him in comparison to the films he made before and after it. It has moments of his distinct macabre - including the freakish duck voice for the killer - but its bland and predictable murder mystery plot and sleaze feels far less creative and legitimately terrifying than the sorts of films dismissed as 'vague' in his filmography.

Sleazy tale of kinky sex and violent murder from Lucio Fulci. The killer talks like Donald Duck, and it's chock full of gory, splashy, straight razor slashings. The sex scenes are totally gratutious and frankly gross. There's also the obligatory Fulci scene of ocular destruction as a hooker gets her eyeball (and one of her nipples) sliced in two with a razor blade.

This is a case of "the trailer is better than the movie". You see an ad for a movie about a serial killer who talks like a duck, so you would expect a comedy right? Instead, it's played 100% completely straight and the hilarious quacking scenes are supposed to be menacing. The tonal disonance completely disolves all tension. The murders become boring instead of gruesome. It doesn't help that the psychoanalyst's magical diagnoses are a complete joke too. And you know who did it halfway through.

Definitely the best made Fulci movie I've seen, not the most fun but the best looking, sounding and most coherent. The Duck voice is instantly annoying and the film tends to drag but the kills are brutal and well done and most of the dubbing and acting are decent.

Well, Fulci is Fulci and he knows his stuff, but it's hard to swallow the outright misogyny!porn on display here. Unless that's the point. I'm not sure.

I have a special place in my heart for giallos, but this one focuses on cheap gore rather than mystery or stylishness. Still better than Saw franchise.

Fulci delivers what is probably the most gruesome and filthy giallo ever. Swings haphazardly between moments of merciless gore to moments of headscratching wtf?!-ness. In other words: It's a Fulci movie.

I appreciate the Italian perviness but there’s no rhyme or reason or pacing or rhythm to any of this film’s storytelling even by slasher standards. The story just goes all over the place from scene to scene like a borderline abstract film.

Fulci presents a vision of NYC where every man in the city is a rapist, a whoremonger, or some other variety of demented pervert. One of runs around doing Donald Duck impressions while he cuts women to pieces, but there's so much casual cruelty that he hardly seems more degenerate than the rest of the bunch.

While it makes more sense than most Fulci movies, it's unfortunately a lot less interesting as a result, with dull characters plodding their way through a plot that starts to drag around the halfway mark & never really recovers. The "faceless killer murdering women" premise is executed decently, the mystery element is actually not bad, and most of the nudity isn't intended to be enjoyable, but overall some things still don't add up & it just feels a bit drawn out. Not awful, but not a must-see.

Seemed like a very complicated way of presenting a story about a guy with a Donald Duck voice that kills women, and that's why I like it. I think this and Cruising make for great AIDs panic era movies despite the latter being made before it happened. There seems to be something here about the punishment of decadence, but it's not quite since it pushes all the blame onto one gender. Still, a theme of promiscuity and indulgence unleashing a more destructive trail of corruption is what I took away.

The meanest, cruelest, grimest movie I think I've ever seen. But not through any fault of Fulci's. He simply refelects the horror of everyday life, of ordinary men. This is one part psycho-sexual phantasmagoria and one part brutally honest portaryl of the world. I'm not sure which is more horrifying.

I’m pretty sure this movie was made to satisfy an unfilled urge to stab everyone, man or woman, Fulci ever met. I certainly walked away feeling like I was bleeding out just a little.

the revelation is nothing too fancy, especially if you know fulci's modus operandi. but i really enjoyed how depraved each character is in his own way, and how there's close to zero "goodie two shoes" around. that's my kind of movie.

Too empty, ugly and (most importantly) boring to get any use out of the notably reprehensible & misogynistic slasher sleaze. It tries to experiment with style but mostly runs on bland nothing.

Top badass moment? Early on a young woman on a bike stupidly crashes into a guy's car, damaging it. She's uninjured and her bike undamaged, but he's naturally a bit pissed about it. She calls him an asshole and cycles off. He's left with a lot of hassle and a big repair bill. Soon after she's murdered by a serial killer. I know it's wrong and everything and I'll probably go to Hell for it, but a little bit of me was glad. Payback is a bitch... and badass. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.
