I'm not quite sure yet, but I reckon this is the only film where Buster Keaton knife-fights the shit out of an octopus.

It's consistently funny all the way through and very well paced.

A pretty funny film, my favorite part being when the girl sits in the folding chair. Priceless.

Just an endless string of very funny gags. Not everything is laugh-out-loud hilarious, but it's always at least a very charming and amusing movie. Buster Keaton's sense of self-deprecating physical presence is amazing. I was also pleasantly surprised by the photography, which I especially loved whenever the swaying of the ship was incorporated (like the hallway of doors opening and closing).

Feels long despite its 59 minute runtime, but there's more of a plot here and they're creative about making the most use out of the nautical setting. As with other silent films sometimes the gags are held on to for a bit too long to make sure you get it. Fav scenes: I liked the breakfast prep, but McGuire paddling Keaton's dive suit like a dinghy is just lol funny. Also when McGuire threw Keaton a life preserver but it bonked him in the head and sunk him.

While at times it feels like the gags don't quite expand into a full-length movie, this still has Keaton's quirky humor in fantastical settings. Most people will remember the swordfish fight, but I'll always remember the captain's portrait swinging outside the porthole. Not Keaton's best, but there are many worse ways to spend an hour.

I thought others of Keaton's were funnier, but this was still wonderfully clever, inventive, and amusing.

Now that I've grown up it takes more to get me laughing at physical comedy, and this definitely hit the spot.

Never really hits it's peak but is nonetheless filled with some of Keaton's best gags. The look on Buster's face when he drinks the coffee is absolutely priceless!

Fun and clever but not as many laugh out loud moments as Keatons' best. There are some inspired moments, though, like the swordfish fight. The ending is pure deus ex machina and seems more than a bit of a cop out.

To say that Keaton has a face only a mother could love would be a lie.

Keaton's incapable rich buffoon ends up on adrift ocean liner with his love interest. While lower in awe-inspiring stunts, although the final fight with the native islanders does contain a few, this has a high density of successful gags, maybe the highest of all Keaton features for me. Kathryn McGuire is a worthy co-star, being more than just a passive love-interest but holding here own very well next to Keaton in the execution of these gags.

Filled with lots of great jokes and gags. Kathryn McGuire was good and Keaton was great but what made the whole thing really work was the great setting.

I'd call this a good comedy. Got quite a few chuckles and some very memorable gags. Was impressed with the underwater scene. I'd watch this again for the laughs.

Superbly executed silent comedy finds Keaton in terrific form as both actor and director, with McGuire a perfect foil. Feels like a further development of ideas toyed with in THE BOAT (1921) - climactic scenes underwater are beautifully executed, and atmospherics aboard the boat are beautifully captured.

Slow to start but quite effective in the second half. Isn't incredibly funny but has many memorable moments. Despite the scale of the movie feeling pretty large for the time and genre the small bits are what really stick out.

Offers a number of genius ideas and funny scenes, but is rather mundane in other parts.

For once, I think I liked the smaller gags better than the big set pieces, though there's plenty of both to go around.

Possibly the most surreal of Keatons works. Not too heavy on laugh-out-loud moments though, but definetely worth a watch.

A neverending stream of fantastic gags. Two of my favorites: the underwater fight with the swordfish and McGuire using Buster as a raft. It also has a few great stunts that look easy when Buster does them. This film is certainly hilarious. Highly recommended.

Absolutely hilarious. Keaton's style of humor really hits the spot for me. Gags come quickly and unexpectedly. Some gags are epic in scope, others are simple but amazing. The wet deck of cards, for example, is ultra simple but Keaton executes it so well that I laughed out loud. Same goes for dozens of others throughout this great movie. This is another wonderful work by the absolute best silent comedian.

For all it's charm, I found it pretty boring. I watched this right after Sherlock Jr. and it was very pale by contrast, especially the music.

A dim-witted couple alone on a runaway steamship, with lots of comic potential that is not wasted. Keaton is in top form both as director and star. My favorite among very many comic bits involves a scary painting of a sea captain that appears to peep at Buster while he's sleeping. Laugh-out-loud funny.
