Bette Davis is an English nanny whose charge is 10-year-old Joey (William Dix), just released from a home for disturbed children where he'd spent two years undergoing treatment for drowning his little sister in the bath. Shortly after his arrival home, suspicion arouses again when his mother (Wendy Craig) is poisoned. But Joey continues to insist Nanny is responsible, just as she was with the death of his little sister, with only a neighboring friend (Pamela Franklin) believing the young boy. (imdb)

Everything is revealed in the last 20 minutes of this 90 minute mystery & those 20 minutes are pretty compelling w/ some still-shocking images & the truth being more complicated than viewers are likely to expect. Unfortunately the film spends those first 70 minutes prolonging the answer as to which one of two characters is a murderer in the least compelling ways with dialogue, direction and performances unspooling as banally as possible. If not for the fast forward button I may not have finished

The premise is a bit silly, but the execution is top notch. Davis gives it her all, but it's the way the film has you wondering, first about what happened and then about which version is true, that makes this rise above the material into genuinely creepy and thought provoking thriller.

Awfully contrived and manipulative (and everyone seems to be rather complacent about attempted matricide). The star was allegedly sloshed through most of it (thus no doubt accounting for the shine in those Bette Davis Eyes). It was fun anyway seeing Pamela Franklin as a little tart (years before Satan's School For Girls). And btw the boy's mom looked exactly like Christopher Guest in drag.

Sparse thriller that succeeds despite a very annoying kid.

Oddly, rather drab and rather fun at the same time. Pauline Kael: "Bette Davis, trying to give a restrained performance as the dowdy, repressed nanny [...]. Restraint is what Davis has not got much of. Antennae flailing wildly, she signals us that she's being self-effacing, that she's holding back [...]. You have to hand it to Davis, though: she is a star. When she can't dominate by a good performance, she dominates by a bad one."

A slow moving thriller with quite good performances from Bette Davis & William Dix. All the other actors ranged between bearable to decent. The ending left me wanting a twist.

SPOILER: The sad story of a young boy who had no respect for authority. Sure Bette Davis may have been insane but that's no excuse for disobeying her.

"A rather quiet, cautious thriller that gives Davis more room for characterization than most of her later films." - Dan Callahan
