They should make more Eco novels into movies. Especially if they're as well made and cast as this one. Can you imagine Island of the Day Before with even a half-ass director or budget? It'd be fucking fantastic.

While I appreciate Sherlock Holmes in a monastery as much as the next guy, I also only care about Sherlock Holmes in a monastery as much as the next guy and unless I missed a couple trains, the next guy cannot care that much about Sherlock Holmes in a monastery. It's like Young Sherlock Holmes without the fun. Connery is great though, strong performance.

Very well made period film set way back. There is something about it that is a little bothersome, I don't know though, maybe it's fully intended to be that way. Anyway great acting really carries the rather long movie along.

At times intriguing, but too often slow, somber and gloomy, the film has a fascinating story to tell, but becomes increasingly muddled as it proceeds, and ultimately makes very little sense. Tendencies to wallow in graphic violence and sex also leaves a nasty taste behind. Compensations are a charismatic star performance from Connery, excellent work by Slater as his young cohort, and fine performances by the cream of the elderly acting crop in support roles. Vivid period atmosphere also helps.

The first two-thirds are a superior and ingenious take on the Holmes murder mystery, and the last third turns into a religious courtroom drama. Not like I'm complaining, mind. The clean and pat ending is bizarre for a movie covered in so much shit, but such is the intentional effect of prayer.

Fails as an adaptation, but succeeds in being a pretty good murder mystery. Captures the feeling of the period if not the substance, and most of the actors are in good form. Slater is painfully out of place. Also Valentina Vargas is smoking hot.

I never read the book, so I can't really say if the movie is a good adaption or not, but what I can definitely say is, that this is one of the best mystery thriller of the 80's. Annaud created a dark and uncomfortable ambient, and his actors like Connery, Slater and of course Ron Perlman (as hunchback) are great. A lot better than modern movies like da vinci code or illuminati.

Don't get why this film doesn't get higher ratings. The fact that its distribution was botched in the US at the time may have something to do with it. Annaud had revolutionized "period" stuff in "La Guerre du Feu" by making it all look dirty, savage, unpolished raw and smelly (somehow). He does it again here - all the monks an unbelievable collection of mugs from hell, the damp & cold almost sweat through the screen, the utter misery of the girl - dark ages come to life, literally. Chilling.

Readers are more tolerant of inaccessibility than viewers, because once youʼve bought a book itʼs nobodyʼs business how much of it you read, skim, or never bother with. Thus, a serious attempt to film this best-selling novel would have been a box office bomb; better to ignore all the intellectual levels, from the nerdy recreation of medieval learned debate to the postmodern irony, and just cash in on the genre elements. Nice gloomy atmosphere (not in the book).

Annaud succeeds primarily in creating a convincing medieval atmosphere, full of ugliness, filth and superstition. The mystery is less convincing, and gets sillier as it progresses, and in his detective role Sean is wont to over-act.

I didn't expect to like it this much. I didn't read the book. The movie has its flaws, but it builds an interesting thing. Oppressive mood, impressive filming location, nice mystery for most of it. Many characters have unique appearances, but they are presented in way that add details to the picture. Some of the quests toward the end were starting to make it seem like a kid adventure movie, but just then, the Inquisition brought an interesting maturity and grittiness back

There's no possible way that a film could incorporate all of the themes and contemplations of the book, which frequently digresses into long asides on theology, architecture, the nature of knowledge, the nature of love... But this nicely hits the major beats of the book's whodunit plot, and visually captures the setting well. Sean Connery and Christian Slater portray their respective characters admirably and enjoyably. Special mention for Ron Perlman's Salvatore as well. Overall a nice watch.

It's really not bad as a film adaptation, with all the pitfalls of a film adaptation of course, though greatly exacerbated by the fact that this is based on an Umberto Eco book.

A foreboding murder mystery with hedy themes of suppression of knowledge, blind faith vs reason and harsh orthodoxy gives the film more layers than just the mystery itself. Star studded cast, a great score and the setting(a remote abbey) all comes together to make a great film. definitely worth checking out.

It shows how churches were like in the rural area of Italy in the 1300s. How blind faith and intellectual minds can conflict yet reside together. The story tells us corruptions and purity of humanity while one monk and his apprentice solve mysterious deaths occurs at a church. I really liked how things tie at the end, and the last line was wonderful. Even though it's a periodical piece, but it reflects our lives now.

Consistent in style and mood, but lacking originality and careful consideration for its characters; they are painted as a bit too unilaterally "evil" and "good". The thematic concerns, then, doesn't carry quite the interest and power it could've, and the film "merely" stands as a moderately effective thriller. A slower pace and a more impartial outlook would've helped.

A good mystery thriller, casting Holmes and Watson as 14th century monks. Along the way it explores adolescent desire, love of literature, religious persecution and questions of integrity. It's not very complex, I suspect the book runs quite a bit deeper. The direction is competent if not especially stunning, Connery is typically charismatic, and Slater hasn't yet become annoying. The big reveal is a little on the unsatisfying side, but the trip getting there is worthwhile.
