Karloff looking gaunt as all hell and staring deep into the viewer's soul with those glowy eyes... an image for the ages. The rest of the movie... not so much. Bland, slow and with terribly uninteresting characters.

Karloff is brilliant, and as long as you don't expect him to shuffle around in bandages, it's worth it for him alone. The rest... eh. Hints that there is a different movie lurking under the surface if they weren't so busy following the plot of Dracula beat for beat to the point where the Van Helsing Light character even seems to figure out the plot based on actor-shared intuition alone.

The only real reason to watch this is for Karloff's wonderful performance as the mummy. His mannerisms and intensity elevates this, but also highlights the completely uninteresting characters that populate the rest of the movie.

I thought it dragged on a little to be honest. It was all a bit nonsensical. Karloff was obviously great as the Mummy but the rest of the characters were a bit uninteresting.

Nice make-up job on Karloff. But not much else for this film to be proud of. It has undergone few butchering sessions due to strict code of the Hollywood at the time, so there are lots of loose ends. Also you easily draw parallels to Dracula (1931) film - story is exactly the same, just replace vampire with mummy, cross with ankh, and you have yourself this film.

The close-ups of Karloff and his glowing eyes are incredible. Everything else is good enough to pass the time. (I'm going to go ahead and ignore The Nubian being magically turned into a slave.)

BORING as hell I was waiting for Brendan Fraser to come and save me but just as I was about to give up hope the Mummy looks at a girl and dies. The poster is more exciting than this nonsense.

Boris (billed as "Karloff, the Uncanny") steals the horror show via his solemn portrayal of ancient Egyptian high priest Im-ho-tep. Freund imbues the eerie proceedings with a darkly hallucinatory quality, while young archaeologist Fletcher delivers the best nervous breakdown I've ever seen on-screen.

A snoozer of a story, wooden acting from the supporting cast, and not nearly enough mummy action. Karloff's fun performance, some impressive makeup effects, and above average cinematography prevent it from being a complete stinker. Oh, and the Blu-ray transfer is remarkable. I know I shouldn't rate movies based on their presentation, but I think I may have added a few points subconsciously due to the gorgeous high def transfer.

Biggest stand-out thing from this movie is the make-up and close-up shots of Karloff's face. Otherwise it's a rather uneventful horror movie that spends more time explaining things than being scary.

Karloff , Freund, and the dude what does the makeup were all on fire. The rest of movie's saving grace is that it's short. Okay, it's not like the best bits were the only decent things going on, but there's a lot of problematic shit regarding modern Egypt, and Zita Johann is a walleyed charisma vacuum.

Having thought the mummy was a shambling monster, this is a surprise - as is the unusual heroine & how she's saved. Also, unlike its peers, not all of the film's anachronisms are unwelcome. While there is the unavoidable slower pacing & ridiculously instantaneous romance, its colonialist mindset only makes for more interesting viewing decades later. It's now hard NOT to root for the devoted mummy in the movie's love triangle w/ the British "heroes" acting like the entitled colonialists they were

A young woman being wooed by an energetic young man finds herself falling under the spell of an older man who seems enervated yet strangely irresistible, as if drawing on deeper cosmic wellsprings that promise a love lasting for all eternity, but we the audience are given to understand that this promise really amounts to the parasitic draining of youth and vitality. In short, a remake of the previous year's DRACULA, right down to the use of Swan Lake during the title sequence. But less good.

Karloff is very good, and his aged makeup was extremely impressive for its time, but Freund's direction is a little flat, and its exotic setting is essentially window dressing for a rather conventional story that plays out in a rather predictable and perfunctory way.

Basically a reskin of Dracula with the same issue: it's only really good when Karloff is staring into the camera, which is grand total of less than two minutes. Also I have to be honest and say I was disappointed by the lack of the stereotypical bandaged mummy with outstretched arms, which I assumed originated with this film.

Decent, with a fantastic performance from Karloff to anchor it, but like many Universal Horrors it just didn't impress me all that much or grip me with the storytelling. The annoying instalove subplot was grating, none of the characters beyond Imhotep are very investing, & the plot- while intriguing enough- doesn't have a whole lot to it. However, my inner Egypt-obsessed child was quite happy to revisit things like Anubis & the pyramids. Worth seeing once to say that I have, but might not again.

The opening scene - a mummified Boris Karloff coming back to life - is very promising. His presence is indeed unsettling and the film capitalizes on that, however the other characters are too simplistic, the stakes are never all that high and there's almost no suspense at all. "The Mummy" runs on curiosity and an entrancingly macabre atmosphere but fails to live up to its promise and gradually falls apart, revealing not much more than exposition, stilted dialogues, pomposity and shallow drama.

Coming off a marathon of all the other classic universal monsters, this was by far the most underwhelming. The archeologists and woman we focus most of the movie are way too uninteresting, it should have followed more on the mummy because he's fucking amazing.

Starts exceptionally well, with a nice mix of awed mythology and grandiosely “hushed-tones” performances, but somewhat loses its way as it proceeds, losing its sense of foreboding atmosphere and dipping in to unconvincing romantic melodrama. Still, overall great fun with Karloff in another iconic horror performance that can’t quite shake the shackles of FRANKENSTEIN, and a good support cast who add some weight to the goings on.

Even at only 70 minutes in length, this film feels very slow. Yeah, I don't know, it was okay. It's certainly not one of the better monster movies of the era. The story is very thin, and doesn't really end in a satisfying way. Boris Karloff was fine, but nowhere near as iconic as his role in Frankenstein (1931). It feels blasphemous to say so, but honestly, The Mummy (1999) is a better film.

An enjoyable if ultimately unremarkable horror. I can't say enough good about Karloff, who has tremendous screen presence here. Freund (earlier the DP for "Metropolis" and "Dracula", among many others) is skilled at creating a mysterious, otherworldly atmosphere, which is aided by all the neat Egyptian iconography. On the other hand, and this is really a product of its time more than anything, the non-Karloff characters are all one-dimensional and we spend too much time with them.

Incredibly talky for a "horror" film. And there's a bit of expectation that you'll see a bandaged creature a bit more that what we do. Still, Karloff is amazing, and those face close-ups were brilliant. It's just that his shine can only go so far in what is otherwise a pretty bland story. (And what's up with his power ring? Wouldn't the next-in-line priest wanted to have snagged that before the entombment?)

Karloff is solid but the character itself is rather flaccid. The story is tedious and completely uninteresting, the writing is standard at best, and everything else is either awkward (the editing, the camerawork) or totally flat (the acting). The setting provides some nice mood and a few interesting moments, but everything else about the film is simple and unexciting.

I'm saddened that I had gone all these years thinking that the old monster movies were the best. I know now that this one suffers from some serious editing issues as well as being pretty boring until the last half-hour, at that point it does pick up, but only enough to be average at best.

Karloff has an unforgettable presence in this film, and Zita Johann does a great job in her own right. The cinematography looks gorgeous in HD. I just wish the chemistry between Manners' and Johann's characters didn't seem so unconvincing, and that the film didn't end so anticlimactically and abruptly. One can feel giant holes in the film from scenes left on the cutting room floor.

Often quite corny, but there are some truly resplendent moments of creepiness to be had, almost entirely thanks to Karloff's performance as the titular villain. The art direction gets downright campy for the ancient flashbacks; it's about as culturally accurate as The Bangles' "Walk Like an Egyptian." Still, Karloff is very obviously a legend for a reason, and the camerawork assists his talents with some great closeups while the sound of silence slowly becomes unsettling.

Rather dated, not least the eyebrows of the female lead but holds up quite well. Somebody had the brilliant realization that mummies aren't actually scary so Karloff spends the most of the time in the guise of a delightfully creepy old Egyptian and actually get a chance to act.

Boris Karloff follows up his Frankenstein performance with another great monster characterization as an Egyptian Mummy. And he does a very credible and spooky portrayal and carries the film nicely. The other roles are well done, but not anywhere in the same league at Karloff. It's a slow moving movie. Still a high quality production with Karl Freund in his first official directors job in the US (rumors has it he doing most of the work for Dracula the year before). Overall a classic horror movie.

sorry, this was boring. karloff looked cool and acted great, but there wasn't any sense of threat for the entire movie. the last ten minutes were cool, but that's about 50 minutes too late for cool stuff to happen. i much prefer the 1959 mummy with christopher lee, although after seeing this i learned that the 59 film is a remake of "mummy's hand" and not this one and gosh there's so many mummy movies i had no idea.
