The film feels surprisingly gloomy and dull for a comedy. The still camera and long-ish takes make it seem a lot longer and duller than a comedy should be. Most of the jokes fall flat, some are amusing for a couple seconds, but then they drag on too long and are repeated too often that it becomes boring. A predictable story, many contrived scenes and an unbelievable romance don't help.
It's not really a bad film, just not a very good one. It passes the time ok, but is forgettable.

There's a funny part and a romantic part and a sentimental part, and it somehow winds up being less than the sum of all these.

last act doesn't quite land or i'd be rating it even higher. the roles this cast were born to play, with the most crackling walk the girl home scene you'll ever find in classic hollywood.

RARBG.

It's like a much tamer version of Three's Company, filled with silly gags throughout the first half that kept me laughing. (I loved the "morning schedule" that didn't work as planned.) While there's nothing outright incredible, the three main parts work so well together. It bogs down a little as it tries to wrap everything up so neatly. If I ever hear "Full speed ahead" again, I'll probably think of this movie and chuckle softly.

Damn The Torpedos. Charles Coburn carries this movie. Every scene he is not in was a drag. The second half of the movie did drag on at points.

Funny at times but everyone’s eventually awful & becomes increasingly cringey. Why so highly rated?! All the characters are annoying, immoral and/or creepy. Granted, some of that is just the presumptuous patriarchal attitudes of its era—but this is rarely so annoying in other romcoms of its era. Feels misogynistic even for the era. Often smug, not that witty & the chars are super annoying. This poor girl is constantly harassed & bullied by the “protagonists”, but then gets increasingly skeazy.

Oh, that kissing scene, where Joel McCrea kisses Jeanie's neck! One of the best seduction scenes ever committed to film!

As artificial as usual for these old Hollywood romcoms, but less garish and cuter than most of them.

Simple story. The dialogue is not very clever, it's pretty straightforward. Acting was on par and made for an enjoyable watch. A feel-good rom-com.

Charles Coburn sets a love trap for no other reason than 'he feels like it', and wins an Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his efforts. What kind of film is this? You know the type of rom-coms Jean Arthur specialized in. This is one of those. Utterly charming. Her and Joel McCrea had such gullible chemistry that you can't not love 'em! The moment I loved the most was the "Newlywed Blues" scene!

Relatively grounded for a screwball, but I'm not sure if that's a good thing. I remember there's this one scene that builds and builds romantic tension until it's about to burst,... but then it just sort of fizzles out and goes nowhere. which I think is an apt way to describe the film in general: Strong comedic moments that die off and give way to relatively flat periods. An okay comedy, but obviously far too uneven to be great. Charles Coburn steals the show in an Oscar-winning performance.

Somewhat uneven comedy - the romance is so-so but film is quite enjoyable overall. Blighted by a few flat spots esp in the last 10 minutes though a twist right at the end was quite amusing. IMHO the cunning & conniving Mr Dingle played by Charles Coburn steals the show & makes this far better when onscreen. Cut it a little slack in the flat spots & you'll enjoy this one.

Flawed (sexist, nonsensical in parts) but fun. Would watch again.

A fun romcom with some very good gags, and no terrible ones that I can recall. There's some great little moments, some of them toying with the production code, and the movie manages to generate quite a lot of heat for the time. My only complaint is that it feels a bit long. The last few scenes should be a madcap flurry of activity, instead they seem to drag on sluggishly. It's not a dealbreaker though, and overall it's a charming and enjoyable experience thanks to Arthur, McCrea and Coburn.

Cute as a button and damn funny too. Jean Arthur is great but the whole goes to another level when Joel McCrea enters the picture. Only fault is that the ending is a little contrived but it's all good enough that it hardly matters.
