The Monastery of Sendomir
Remove ads
The main part of the film is told in a flashback by a monk to two visiting noblemen on their way to Warsaw in the 17th century. He tells them how a mighty count named Starschensky once ruled Sendomir (Sandomierz), but after an intrigue in which his wife was unfaithful with her own cousin he had to use all his resources to build the monastery where they are now staying. Finally I find The Monastery of Sendomir, a Victor Sjöström directed film from his days in native Sweden! Sjöström is one of my favorite silent directors so it's always nice to find his treasures. At first I struggled to see the magic of this film, but really it's all about the confrontation scene which is where the power lay! Tore Svennberg as the proud and betrayed husband grips the moment full-heartedly. It's a tragic story and Sjöström catches the grim sadness in his own special way.
