The monsters on the outside aren't the scary ones. It's the ones on the inside. Awesome ending as well as it doesn't bow down to a typical Hollywood ending.

While another Darabont-King collaberation may be considered to be retreading well covered ground, I found this to be surprisingly great. The Mist carries itself in the style of a classic horror film, constantly building up tension and suspense. Creatures are typically King, creative and eerily distinctive, although we never see enough of them or their ecosystem. It's worth the watch just for that sadistic smack-in-the-face of an ending and the one blurred sight of the gigantuan tentacle monster.

It's your usual Stephen King creation - some interesting ideas let down by amateurish handling of character interactions. The rising pressure and sense of dread created by this scenario is true to life, but this goes horribly off the rails as the religious aspect is expanded. If a priest had instigated something less hysterical it could have been interesting and at least credible. Instead this devolves into TV movie ridiculousness, followed by an ending that I absolutely didn't buy.

With a slowed down pacing Darabont is taking the worn out plot by gulps. Mist has nothing special to offer in any of the scenes, its old fashioned ways lets us breath and enjoy an unforced tension with some below average cgi which doesn't center our attention on. People dying through the movie isn't delivered in a way that is either melodramatic or hyped up with any artistry. Considering Mist's progression the ending was not surprising, offering no closure but at least some sense of irony.

Pretty good by the standards of modern horror. A lot of the characters are walking cliches, but the pacing saves it from becoming boring. Kudos for having the balls to include that ending!

Yes The Mist has it's share of cliches, I really do feel the entire religious zealot subplot could've been completely done away with, but what it does right it does so very, very right. Thomas Jane is in top form and really makes you believe he is an average person in an extraordinary situation. The movie has no fake-jump scares, which is a God send because they're so overused. The film captures you in the terror of the unknown and the tension of everyone trying to survive. Great horror film.

Pretty bad. It could've been truly scary, but unfortunately you meet the "thing" quite early on, and it isn't creepy or anything. The characters are extremely annoying, the writing pretty bad and ending pretty funny. *Spoil* Was glad the kid finally died but only in the end. One of the good things of the movie was a short glimpse of a The Goon comic book in the pharmacy, and I think Cthulhu finally made it to earth. Too bad it got defeated pretty quickly

I like the concept of breeding tension and animosity among a group besieged by an unknown threat. But here the idea is lacking execution. The mediocre CGI is the least of my concerns. The characters border on frustratingly stubborn and stupid, and most of the acting is laughable. I just think it could have benefited from more ambiguity.

I had the ending spoiled for me before I saw the film, but I still enjoyed it. Some of the effects are weak and the monsters can come across as a little cheesy - but this is more of a social commentary and psychological/suspense thriller rather than a jump-out-of-your-seat horror flick. The performances are raw, emotional and believable. If you haven't already heard how this ends and are looking for a tense movie that isn't afraid to kick you in the gut when you're down, check it out.

For Frank Darabont (whose Shawshank Redemption is still one of my all time favorites), this is a complete 180° turn around. He succeeds in portraying a horrifying horror story, strongly held together by a great cast (Marcia Gay Harden's character was kinda annoying, but she played it so well), its imaginative and disgusting monsters, and its "slap you in the face" ending, which was more than satisfying (considering the story). Definitely a film you shouldn't watch twice.

Tremendous modern horror with a strong comment on post-9/11 America and the way society reacts to tragedy and the unknown. The movie scores big points for its gut-punch ending, because whether you like it or not, ultimately, it's very fresh, daring, and harrowing. Viewed in conjunction with Cloverfield, it makes for a great horror double-bill (even the monsters are similar). This is an A-grade B-movie.

This felt sort of like an amped up and drawn out Twilight Zone episode. I was worried about the CGI, and some effects are pretty hokey, but others look great. There are plenty of tense moments, and a refreshingly low amount of "jump" scares. The ending deviates from the novella, but it's certainly not a happy one. I thought the crazy religious woman was a too over the top and I really didn't buy into her character gaining such a following.

Initially well-done, claustrophobic set-up in the spirit of 50s schlock (and the Carpenter spirit, note a key opening poster) quickly unravels once the contrived, unconvincing tension begins to develop inside the grocery store between the characters - may also be a spoiler to note that the "mist" itself is an unnecessary and inexplicable red herring of a sort, all leading to a laughably unconvincing "profound" finale. Given characters on the spectrum of unplayable, a decent cast does its best.

Incredibly dumb. I can't tell what's bad script writing and what's just Stephen King's original dialogue. While an entertaining thriller (only as such thanks to its solid time-tested premise and structure), the acting is hammy and possibly trying to make up for generic characters, the CGI is horrible and worthy of a Jimmy Neutron episode, and the social commentary is overly contrived with its forced, quick pacing and is on-the-nose to the point of losing all actual relevance to the real world.

One of those horror films that uses the atmosphere to explore human dynamics, though it still has its share of blood and gore, though not so much scares. It does an interesting job of it in broad strokes but the details are pretty weak as the characters are mostly plot and theme devices. Harden is the only one who transcends that with a good performance. The ending is an idea that appeals to me, but the execution is really weak.

(Spoilers, I suppose) I was rolling with the movie until the end, when someone (I guess it would be Stephen King) gleefully slapped me across the face. It felt like being on the wrong end of a Humphrey Bogart line: "When you're slapped, you'll take it and like it." I guess we're supposed to take it and like it because satisfying endings (that don't totally crap on everything that happened in the movie) are so "cliche". For the record, I like watching Bogart slap people.

If you're a fan of the novella, this is definitely worth a watch. It takes a hard look at how people react when they have their back up against the wall and the impossible starts happening. The pacing, effects, and acting are all good. The story takes its time to actually move but it's interesting to watch the characters react to the disaster and try to survive while coping with the insanity. The end may be jarring, but on the whole I would recommend this to any fan of horror/thrillers.

I consider this to be an important film. It's a critique on civilization, self-preservation amongst a failing hierarchy, and ultimately a comment on Bush's post-9/11 America. However, if this film is remembered for anything, it will be for its kick in the teeth ending. I never saw it coming and what's impressive is that Darabont wrote that himself. Stephen King's original ending was completely different, but he did say that he loved the ending Darabont wrote and he thinks it works wonders.

This really only works if you buy the ending, which I didn't. I doubt if that crazy religious woman would really get a following like she did, but she was a pretty freaky villain. The creatures are kind of cheap-looking but at least there are lots of them. I would have liked to see more of what was happening in the outside world and less of the stupid morons in the grocery store. Did I mention the ending was stupid? The CG is passable, but a few bits are kinda fake. The religious nutcase was WAY overdone, an irritating attempt at shallow social commentary. A few of the other characters and situation are also rather stock. And the ending... well, it certainly is dark. I think King actually got this one right the first time. Darabont's seems cheap and a bit tawdry in comparison. As for the rest of it, a pretty good horror film, and when the CGI worked, it worked well. Nothing groundbreaking, though.

I was hoping for a little better from another Darabont/King collaboration, but this was still good. It's a horror movie, but the simple plot keeps it mysterious and tense, even when the monsters aren't on the screen, and the psychological aspects of the situation are really well done. The monsters themselves can be silly at times, but are overall frightening enough, especially in the given scenario. The ending to this is fucking... I don't want to spoil it, but goddamn.

I wasn't enthusiastic about going to see this 2-hour Stephen King thriller. I mean, what could be exciting about people stuck in a grocery while all hell is breaking loose outside? Surprisingly, time flew by while watching The Mist. A well-crafted script, loaded with tension and an excellent job by the cast separates this movie from most others originating from King stories. Unfortunately, the ending is shamefully contrived, making the judgement of Darabont (writer/director) questionable.

The Mist is a surprisingly gripping thriller with a great story, moody atmosphere and well-written characters. The CGI of the monsters in the mist, at times, is terrible. It feels like it should have came out in 1999. That being said, the movie's strong points are when it relies solely on the characters being frightened out of their mind and left to simply wonder what it is that hunts them. The ending is specifically unfulfilling, but the last 15 minutes are great otherwise.

Quando apareceu um poster do Carpenter tive certeza que ia ser bom, Carpenter tem sido pai de boa parte do horror político dos últimos 40 anos pelo modo que atravessou a Era Reagan. Darabont uses the unexplained phenomena that envelops the small town as a way to explore the depths and conflicts of human nature and some of the film's best scenes are the tense moments trapped in the grocery store. When the CGI is revealed too much, the film falters, but when we (and the characters) are in the dark, it's often terrifying.

The Mist is an oft forgotten and under appreciated Stephen King adaptation that has something to say. Plenty of films have well done commentary on society, but few can do it in a B-movie-type-of-way that entertains. The Mist was a very scary movie in a very intelligent way. The Mist spent more time focusing on the horrors of humanity instead of the very real monsters that are terrorizing this normally quiet Maine town. The casting for this movie was very well done. At times borders on camp, it's still a pretty miserable and horrifying film, using the space (at times wide-open but with plenty of clever bits of intimacy) and a hint-at-but-don't-show philosophy. As far as the actual story, it's one of King's better adaptations, with memorable characters and great moments of catharsis.

A tribute to 50's B-movies with an unbearably shrill religious angle out of nowhere (mind you, this is coming from an atheist) and an idiotic tragic ending that wasn't in the book.

Unlike shock and gore horror movies, the Mist does a great job at setting up the suspense and tension for their scenario. Several of the actors are excellent in their roles, though I wish some of the side characters were a bit more fleshed out. The "Mist" itself is a great terror on its own - I almost wish they hadn't muddled up such a great source of horror with more tangible monsters, and the actual action/gore scenes they do have are a little underwhelming. But a solid thriller nonetheless

Absolutely abysmal cinematography spoils what could have been an interesting little film.
