A moving story told primarily through striking visuals and gorgeous music, with dialogue used only when absolutely necessary. The location shooting and native extras give it an authenticity and impact that more recent Hollywood films can't replicate. Only a poor sound mix that muffles some important conversations detracts from the experience.

Beautiful and moving, one of the best period films I know. Unfortunately, it is often misunderstood, either as missionary propaganda or as an atheist movie, but it's neither; it is about history. Rarely has a film captured the universal processes behind "history" as well as this one; the relationship between the individual and structure, the clash of cultures, the struggle of conflicting ideologies. Excuse the rambling, I just really love this movie.

It is hard to fault a film as well made as "The Mission". While it does nothing out of the ordinary, or particuarly different to inspire, there is no denying just how well put together this movie is, even if it never quite seems to do enough to elevate itself to truly brilliant. High production values, good photography, effective score, great cast, top performances and a plethora of rather splendid beards make for excellent viewing.

One of the few films where the score is perhaps the star. Beautiful cinematography and visually stunning in parts this is probably Roland Joffé at his best as a Director.
The acting is convincing in the main although for my money Jeremy Irons is better here than De Niro.

Enjoyably/annoyingly old-fashioned & sincere historical spectacle about the complicated & conflicting relations between catholic faith, the church and the colonial project. Benefits hugely from both on-location production and a gorgeous score by Morricone. The story is very basic and complies to some religious & Eurocentric narratives but manages not to be horribly simplistic or without introspection. When the inevitable action finale comes it's more tragic & brutal than exciting or heroic.

Boring 18th century politics. And on top of that...they couldn't even be bothered to make it historically accurate. But apparently the score and cinematography are great. I've learned that whenever a movie is praised for its cinematography, that movie is crap. Note to self: Make a film, shoot a lot of waterfalls and green fields, be known as a visionary filmmaker. Plot? Drama? Not necessary.

A peculiar film - due probably to its slow-burning romanticism and unapologetic religiosity. Although its magnificent acting and cinematography are nothing to brush casually aside, it's Morricone's score that really elevates this into something enigmatically spiritual.

Breathtaking, but also surprisingly upsetting. It's as real as films come when dealing with historical injustice. De Niro is good, Irons is better, but the music and landscapes are the true stars.

Piercing screenplay by Bolt and a great score do not make up for the directorial shakiness of Joffe in an epic film that feels smaller than it should. Joffe is uncertain about the spiritual core of the film. His gaze flits from the bishop to the penitent to the saint to the natives to the colonizers giving none adequate chance to develop beyond stereotype. Poor sound editing is often distracting. De Niro's performance feels out-of-place in the setting. Beautiful failure elevated by its themes.

Seen: 2. This is the second time I have seen it, because I couldn't remember much of anything from the first time, fifteen or so years ago. I now see why I couldn't remember much. While it has merit, it is completely forgettable and thoroughly unengaging. That score everyone praises hits the wrong tone on a few occasions, and the performances are so damn lifeless.

It seems quite spectacular and is all together well produced, but it just comes across as too ordinary and too stuffy. You can imagine how much more interesting and revealing it would've been in the hands of someone like Herzog who has a knack for making stories like this truly seem larger than life on film, though this one seems to be a little too presentable and without much to really chew on.

Half of the (high) vote goes to Morricone & DiscoveryChannel-like nature images, i know. But it has also good acting, a solid "historical-inspired" tale and good war-scenes too.

The big selling points seem to be the music and cinematography, and while I'll agree that they're good neither feels so superlative as to make the film memorable because of them. The content has potential and touches on an interesting narrative and themes, but it feels gutted and left me with the missed opportunity overshadowing all the good stuff.

Mind numbingly boring. I felt like I was watching a documentary. A lot of unnecessary scenes. I tried to watch it on two occasions, the first time in 10th grade history class, and again 7 years later. It did not get any better.

Magnificent, sumptuously filmed epic; superbly performed by De Niro and Irons, and underpinned by a fascinating screenplay by Bolt which effectively explores many fascinating philosophical issues, chiefly the conflict between free will and religious dogma. Robust and genuinely thrilling at times, complemented by a typically enchanting (and iconic) Morricone score.

A wonderfully inspiring film, The Mission successfully interprets the impact of Catholicism on the Guarani Indians. With superb acting from both Jeremy Irons and Robert De Niro, the audience feels complete empathy for the Guarani and are able to relate with the internal struggle Irons is faced with. The Mission tells a beautiful story of redemption, sacrifice, and love.

I wouldn't have minded if the brutality taking place had been more explicit on screen. Joffé's film seems too restrained in a way; he could, for instance, have further explored some of his weighty themes, e.g. the morality of being a martyr, the hypocracy of the church etc. and, by the end, I was a bit disappointed. Not by the outcome - rather by my lack of emotional involvement. It's solid, if not quite great. Morricone's score is, however, and Irons outshines the likes of De Niro and Neeson.

This film seems to understand martyrdom, I think because it retains a sense of mystery and beauty toward the priests. I had always been taken by the way the two primary priests had different approaches to the attack, but now it's Irons' character that continues to draw me in, a man who manages to be courageous despite his fear. Joffe gives us some amazing vistas, while the DeNiro's penance scene remains the defining moment of the film.
